You know all 4,000+ members well enough to say you trust them?

Besides, you don't even have to be registered on the forums to read them.

I just dropped my placemark on top of the city I live in. Either way I wouldn't be worried about marking your exact location, unless you have a show bike collection and share that info here.

Since we have this map we should start a "Do you lock you door?" thread and cross check everyone to see where they live.  ;)

Edit: I really wouldn't be to worried if you mark you exact house, it's just another guy/girl with another bike. Normal thieves just drive through parking lots with a pick-up truck and throw bikes in the back. I would be more worried about that.

if we could do just by zip code, it would pin the post office in that zip

It will actually pin the geographic center of any particular zip code, not that it makes any difference, though.  I think that was Glenn's plan, to connect member's zip code entered during registration link to the map.

Would it be way overboard for the mods to send everyone a PM informing members that they can put themselves on the map? I really like being able to see where members are, especially some that might be close to me, but I think the map may get lost in the shuffle before it reaches critical mass. A group PM could provide simple instructions for creating map markers.

Also, would it make sense to create a Google user/password that all members could use? A shared account would make it easier/quicker for non-Google users.

I thought this was a great idea, so I set up an account.

I've updated the instructions. I'll PM Phxmark123 to see if he'll edit his top post to include this:

Here's How to Put Yourself on the Map

1) Go to the Google SOHC Member Map.
2) Log into Google, which you can do right on the map page. If you don't have your own Google/Gmail account, you can use this account:
    Username: sohc4membermap
    Password: sohc4member
3) Find your location on the map.
4) Click the "Edit" button (found to the left of the map at the top of the member list).
5) Locate the "Push Pin" icon at the top of the map.
6) Drag the icon to where you live.
7) Add details.

Tips:
  • A fast method to find your location is to enter it in the search box.
  • Some members have suggested putting your push pin over the center of your town if privacy is desired. If so, simply enter your city and state (or equivalent) in the search box to find it.
  • You can easily move the push pin or change the details after you place it on the map.

OK that took me ages but finally I got it all sussed, I'm on the map, nearly missed as New Zealand is about the size of an ant!

Not anymore. NZ now has a giant push pin on it. ;-)

Man, oh man is that cool--living in the Art Deco capital of the world. I didn't know there was such a place. We've got a bits of Art Deco here and there, but you've got to look to find them.

When you guys go to put your info in, make sure that you aren't changing the name of the map to your username and description.  The name of the map, at least right now, is "SOHC4 Member Map" with the description reading, "This is a map of the members of the SOHC4 Forums."

Not only Canada, but also holding the title for most northern.

We can safely exclude the person who put a marker in the wastelands of Baffin Island.

DarkRider, I'm guessing that you head west for some amazing mountain rides. The Canadian Rockies is the most beautiful countryside I've seen--more spectacular than the Alps.

Hey 333, I don't see a marker for you at Maclean if that's what you mean. You should just be able to drop the marker where you want and add your name, etc.

If you want, I'll drop a marker with your name on it there.

My profile isn't there either.  And when I go there now, there are no placemarks on top to "pull" down.
