Regulator rectifier
« on: July 19, 2008, 06:52:55 PM »
Well here I sit with my solid state regulator/rectifier off my 78 750 and was woundering if I did the right test on the rectifier side, I had the ohm s set on 20k and got readings of 6.30 on two yellow leads and 6.05 on one. Is my unit cooked or am I doing this wrong???.  My stator reads 54 volts at 5,000 rpms on all three leads.  Thanks  Joeb.   ??? ??? :-\ :-\

google the 'electrex fault finding chart' . There is a link here . go to the main web page ,to the techical library, then 'bike specific tech, cb650 [ i know you dont have a 650] . at the bottom there is a link for 'daves ultimate guide 650, there is a link. this should work to check all your charging problems.

The rectifier has six diodes, which are silicon or germainium devices.  To activate, they need a certain voltage, usually .7 or .6V.

Todays multimeters inject very little voltage into the circuit they are testing, usually well below the voltage threshold on a normal resistance setting on the meter.
To measure diode function, they often have an additional position, a picture of a diode. -|>- .
Use this setting to measure diode functionality.  You should get a high resistance reading with one meter probe polarity, and a low resistance reading with the meter probes reversed.

Well thanks for the input guys got it figured out ,need to visit Z-1 enterprises for some electronic do-dads  ;D some of my conectors need to be replaced. I now have 14.45 volts at the battery at 4,000 rpm.  Two  Tired we need to get together with Scondon and go for a ride you live right down the street from where I work.

If you haven't already seen this post: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=12465.0 , Pinhead laid out a very cheap and effective way to replace your existing regulator and rectifier.

I just tried the low cost regulator referred to in Pinhead's post [previous note url].  The regulator worked great -- for about three minutes and then started smoking...  All my connections were good and my charging system works great if I connect the fields directly to the battery. I have a cb650/1982.  Auto regulator should work, but maybe if you pay 15$ you get what you pay for - should have bought the 30$ version....?

I don't understand why B+ had to be connected though since Ign should have been good enough.

If you have a RR and can figure out which section of it doesn't work [regulator or rectifier] you can indeed just buy and wire in that section.
