New guy from Virginia
« on: July 22, 2008, 06:35:13 PM »
Hi guise, noob from northern VA. I have a 76 750F SS in yellow, I got the bike about a year ago. It runs decent right now, i've got the fork seals, boots replaced, carbs cleaned and synced up, a caliper rebuilt out of 2 old crappy ones. I am having a few problems with it and hopefully you gentlemen are going to be able to help  me solve them.

Welcome from DC.  Mine's a yellow 76ss as well.

1st-  what's the problem?

2nd-  pictures, we need pictures.

(some members would say those come pictures first, problem second.)

Here she is after a good cleaning.

Ok the problems are as follows:

The front brakes don't really stop the bike, i have new pads and rotors coming hopefully thats all it is.

The bike runs fine up to speeds of 65 MPH all day long but on high speed hiway trips 75+ for more than 20 mins it starts to loose power and won't rev up, then I pull over let it sit and it run fine again for a while. I'm thinking overheating is there anyway I can be sure and how can I fix this.

Engines cases have clear coat failing i need to wait to winter to fix this problem I guess, cause I don't want to pull the engine and have it professionally cleaned and recoated, but is there anything I can do in the mean time.

Welcome from McLean.  Nice ride.

Pads might help, but the caliper probably needs rebuilding.  As for the power issue, I probably shouldn't ask this question in the "introductions" section, but here goes.  What oil are you using?  If you have lurked in this forum for any amount of time, you'll know that oil is a highly argued issue.  While we all can agree that someone can use the wrong oil, we can't seem to agree what the right oil is.

Nice looking bike.  Wish I'd found one with original paint.

Seconded on the clean the caliper.  you might as well just order a new seal for it as well, cause they're like, 5 bucks and if the thing leaks you've contaminated your spanking new pads.  Brakes on these things aren't crazy good in the first place.  Consider upgrading to stainless steel lines.

Don't know on your lack of power issue.  Around here, you'd better be able to go 75, eh?  From previous discussions, you might want to make sure that your fuel delivery is good (tank vent clear, fuel filter clear and good routing if installed, clean carbs).  There's a filter above the float needles that was practically packed full of crap on mine.

And subscribe to the DC area rides thread over in the regions forum.  Maybe we'll actually all manage to get together for a run some day.
