carb is dripping.....UPDATE...ARE YOU KIDDING ME.........
« on: July 15, 2008, 12:04:55 PM »
carb is dripping on the 1980 cb650....is there anyway to stop this....tried the hitting it with a screw driver deal and it is just barely dripping every once in a while....anything short of a rebuild as the damn rebuild kits for this year are impossible to find....any solution would be great...maybe I will take a couple of more wacks at it with the handle of the screw driver again...............................SORRY DOING THIS IN CAPS ITS AN UPDATE...STOOD THERE LAST NIGHT LOOKING AT THE CARB DRIPPING AND WAS PISSED I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE CARBS OFF FOR A THIRD TIME THIS YEAR. THEN I THOUGHT I WONDER IF THE DRAIN SCREW WAS TIGHT...SO I GOT A SCREW DRIVER TIGHTENED IT UP A LITTLE SO IT WAS LOOSE. THOUGHT IT WAS TIGHT WHEN I PUT EVERYTHING BACK.....AND THE CARB STOPS DRIPPING...SO JUST ANOTHER CASE OF LOOKING FOR THE USUAL BIG PROBLEMS AND TOTALLY OVERLOOKING WHAT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

your floats are sticking.  if the screwdriver to the bowl isn't freeing them up,  you might be able to get away with dropping the bowls (if you have a right angle ratcheting screw driver this will be more possible) and spraying carb cleaner up into where the floats pivot.

a full breakdown and cleaning would be best and you can reuse the old bits if you don';t have a kit- cleaner is still better even if they are the same old bits.

Are you 100% sure the float height is set right?  Are you sure the over-flow standpipe is not cracked?  Just a few more things to consider...good luck with it.

Bobber...did you do the cleaning or have someone do it for you?  Just want to be sure those floats were set correct for you.  As far as the overflow standpipes, you may not even see the crack.  Hope you can find the problem.

You would actually be setting the height of the floats themselves.  The float is located in the "float bowl" of the carb.  That is done when you have them off.  You tip the carbs until the needle just seats and then check the height between the bottom of the float and the bottom of the carb base.  You might want to just ask your grandfather if he checked the float height.  Of course, he would need to know the height before he checked it so he would know what it should be.  Many times people just clean the needles and jets and do not check the float height.  Maybe that is what happened.  Below is a pic for you of the floats (brass looking things) on the bottom of the carbs.

Could it be worn needle/float valves? Only reason I thought to ask is because mechanic just found my bike needs a couple replacing... it leaks a bit of fuel from carbs when engine isn't running.

Was going to buy a whole carb rebuild kit but couldnt find one for a 1980....wonder if the float valves are the same in other models or if the freaking honda dealer would have them and how much they would want for them.....any help here as I plan to try and fix this problem this weekend...that damn expensive gas dont want to even lose tiny droplets of it

The 79 and  80 cb650 slide valve carbs have the solid plastic floats and are adjustable. The 81 and 82 cv carbs have plastic floats , including the arms and are non adjustable.

Can't see the forest for the trees...happens to us all.  On that note, isn't it funny how whenever you're looking for your keys for 15 minutes they end up being in your pocket?

hey, what about the carb vent? I had it on CV carbs, drove me nuts, as it turned out, the carb bowls vents were clogged. Once fitted with pipers, problem was gone...
I don't know if you have them on slide carbs, though.
I just looked at manual. I think you have them too, between 1-2 and 3-4 carbs.

Well I am going to check when I get home but the bike wasnt leaking last I checked...but maybe I should check the carb vents...not sure if that plays into peformace or mileage...that is the first that I have heard of them.
