74 CB550 Hesitation when Hot
« on: August 11, 2008, 12:08:21 PM »
Hi There...my first post, loving this site, lots of great info on these old bikes.

I have a 74 CB550, carbs cleaned, rebuilt and sync'd. New points, air filter, timing done, tapped clearance adjusted.  The bike runs great when cold, starts and no hesitation problesms.  Once the engine heats up (after about 15min of riding)  I get a hesitation (engine chuggs) when starting off from a stop.  If I give it more throttle, it pulls hard without hesitating right up to redline.  Also, if I am cruising with little throttle, then I twist into it ever so slightly it will also hesitate.  When I go heavy on the throttle, no promlems at all.  I pulled the plugs and looks like #3 is running hot (lean), and the rest seem to be ok...if not slightly rich.

What can I try?

Make sure your air filter is clean or new and adjust your airscrews to lean or richen the idle circuit. There is a great carburation link in the FAQ as well.
