Newbie Mistake - stuck brake pad
« on: July 21, 2008, 09:49:57 PM »
So, I was cleaning all the corrosion on my brake pads and calipers, and applied some copper grease.  No the pads are stuck.  Only the bottom portion moves when I apply pressure on the brake lever.  Being a complete newb, I don't know how to get these pads out.  Anybody have any tips?

Knowing what bike the brake caliper belongs on is a start ;)
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Not exactly sure what spot you're in but if the pads are clamped to the rotor, try this...

Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper.  You can "persuade" the caliper side to side and away from the rotor (upwards-ish) with leverage of a stout screwdriver.

You're best to avoid opening the bleeder and don't disconnect the brake line.  You'll need that connected to get the piston out - you'll be able to pump it out with the brake lever.  Don't ask me why this comes to mind right away.

There are lots of posts on cleaning up the piston and putting seals in, etc.... but my experience is that old seals are often still good but the groove inside the caliper needs to be cleaned and the piston needs to be cleaned as well (in the case of a stuck piston).
