Saturday was Bargain Day!
« on: September 03, 2005, 05:16:43 PM »
Ok, I know that it's still Saturday in the Northern hemisphere, but down south, it's Sunday. Now it's also "Father's Day" here in Oz, and so on Saturday morning, my wife foolishly encouraged me to go find myself a "Father's Day" present, because I couldn't communicate to her anything in particular that she could reasonably be expected to go out and buy for me.

Well I had a couple of errands to run anyway, my battery charger wasn't working because an electrical doobery called a "Full Pulse Bridge" was cactus, so I went to an electronics store and bought a new one, for around 2 bucks, which was better than buying a new battery charger, and while I was there I bought a digital watch with a pulse monitor, as I like to walk with the wife on weekends to burn off all the taco's and pizza I consume during the week, it was also a bargain at 39.95. That was my "Fathers Day" present from the family, cool.

Then I dropped into my local motorcycle wrecking yard. Geoff, the proprieter, has sold me many motorcycles over the years, so was quick to call me on Wednesday to say he'd just picked up a Suzuki GS1000G (big shaftie) so I told him I'd have a look, but feigned disinterest, as I do prefer the chain driven models. I told him that all I really wanted was the front end and the exhaust, but I'd take the whole thing if necessary, to save him pulling it apart and being "stuck" with slow-moving parts to sell, or eventually, throw out.

Anyway, it was a running bike in pretty good condition, so the bartering began, and a deal was finally clinched for $410.00 (Aussie bucks, about 300 US) with delivery to my place, IF, he threw in a complete set of HM341 exhaust pipes for my CB750K3! Sweeet! He said that they were pretty rusty, but I could see that most of the "rust" was in fact, road grime, tar  and grease. It all came off when I got them home and scrubbed them with a 3m nylon scourer and some "truck wash", leaving me with one very nice original set of pipes indeed!

He's an expert on R1/GSXR1000/Hayabusa stuff, but really has no idea what this older stuff is worth, so I didn't bother enlightening him, but I'd almost bid on a set of 4 into 4 pipes in similar condition last week as I was getting desperate, (the bike's almost finished) starting at 500 Aussie bucks!

Woohoo! Man, the big Suzuki is a fine bike too, I screwed my spare number plate onto it and took it for a short ride, and it seems to go well, I just need to give it a full service before I go any further afield, but it's got a near new front Michelin tire and a genuine Aussie hand built "Megacycle" exhaust system, all it needs is the seat recovered (I've got a new one in a box) the tank painted and a set of sidecovers sourced on ebay, and it's a 2000 dollar motorcycle, I'll probably sell it as the garage is getting congested and I need to raise some funds for a couple more CB750 projects)  plus I got the pipes! Oh, and once again I sneaked it into my garage without the wife finding out, life is sweeeeet! Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah Mick, I had that garage built when we bought the house, the biggest the council would allow me to build was 20 x 30 feet, it looked like a big barn when it was empty, but now I'm tripping over stuff just moving around it. I work in the country (on an army base) and the locals here all have 40 x 60 feet sheds, man I'd love one of those!

I also put up a 10' x 10' garden shed behind mine, and with some re-arranging, I might be able to get another one in there as well, as it's only wasted space. It'd be nice to get a lot of stuff out of my garage so I actually have the room to do stuff in there, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Terry, that is the best way to score pipes, non?
Looks good.
Don't ride the shafty too much, you might just think about giving up chains.

Ha ha, nah, it's ok Michel, I like chains, much easier to alter the final gearing than on a shaftie. The turkey who owned it put a 120/80 x 17 rear tire on it, (should be 130/90 x 17) so effectively geared it downy a huge percentage, it must be pulling about 6000 RPM (no tach cable) at 60 Mph? Cheers, Terry. ;D

You're lucky to have that wife Terry. Mine notices everything.
The garage was getting a bit small with three bikes & I'd just scored an old lathe, so a nice big concrete slab went down.
I go away on the bike for a weekend & when I come back there's this bloody big aviary sitting in the middle of the slab.
"aren't they pretty birds darling?" AAAAARRGH!!!

G'Day Dave, well you made the mistake of going away, so blame yourself, ha ha! Seriously though, I've got an old BSA .22 air rifle, and am known in certain circles as "The Chicken Jackal", not as a reference to my cowardly behavior of course, but for my other, darker side, as a paid "Pet Assassin"!

That's right mate, for a small fee, (6 pack of Crownies) I can bump off said inhabitants of that cage taking up valuable space in the garage, and your "missus" as well, if she'll sit still long enough, you have to understand that a .22 calibre air rifle isn't the most powerful of firearms when used on humans, more annoying really. Let me know mate, and I'll start working on my alibi! Cheers, Terry. ;D

SWEET Terry ;D ;D ;D Sounds about like the deal I got just last week. These deals are fairly rare so you have to be poised to nail it when it happens.

Enjoy

Don't be too quick to sell the GS1000G.  I rode one for a number of years, complete with Vetter windshield & bags.  Great touring bike for the open spaces.  Reliable, plenty of power, good on gas, comfortable--what more can I say.  Stock seat was the most comfortable I'v ever sat on for over an hour.  Only thing to watch out for is the charging system.  You need to make sure all of the connectors are clean and tight.  Lots of info on the web about this.

Sold mine when I bought a ZRX1200 and wish now I'd held onto it.        .
I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

Thanks mate, I'm tending to lean towards keeping it, I'm slowly working through the "Streetfighter" mods that were done, like painting the engine and carbs gloss/matt black, and gluing pieces of aluminum checker-plate to various engine parts etc, it's all slowly coming back to "acceptable" condition, but that engine is maybe the sweetest of all my Suzy's, it just purrs!

The wrecker told me that the charging system was shot, but I found that the problem was that someone had disconnected the alternator wires to the regulator, now it's pumping out a healthy 14 volts! I just need some sidecovers, a seat cover (the one in the pic is a NOS one for another project) and a new speedo-tach assembly, and it'll be back on the road for summer! Cheers, Terry. ;D

You've got me thinking Terry. I've got a BSA too, only trouble is that it's not a rifle.
Maybe I can think up a way to attach the aviary to the Thunderbolt.

I have a cat you can borrow,  Pretty thing but kills birds all day long and the dog eats them them pukes feathers in the attached garage.  Sounds like you need both if them.

The other terry
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

My wife has four cats (it's weird, they eat so much better than I do, but I'm the one putting on weight? Hmmnnnn....) and they love eating birds to supplement their diet.

Anyway today I was re-seeding the lawn adjacent my sidewalk, and having all those cats around I figured that the birds  would be too scared to even think about nibbling that seed, well bugger me, I turned around and my big black tomcat, Jerry, was digging a hole in my beautifully raked topsoil so he could take a dump in it!

Oh well, it might be good fertilizer, the dog#$%* in my back yard seems to work very well! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Cats are no good for me, my mutant cattle dog eats them.
Went out back today & one of the budgies is dead-pecked to death by the others. Little buggers may murder each other & I'll have my slab back.
Yeah Terry, the Thunderbolt is nice. Trouble is I can only use it in the mountains up my way. Running on the freeway boils the oil.
Ain't it funny - 650 was such a massive machine when I was growing up.

Hey Dave, why does it boil the oil? Is this a common fault with old Beeza's? Can you fit an oil cooler? You're right, I remember the first time I saw a CB750, I just couldn't get over how big they were?

I knew two kids who somehow managed to convince their parents to buy them a CB750 when they were in their very early teens, somehow they managed to survive them, but the "Street Cred" that these kids had when we were riding small dirt bikes around was enormous!

I bought my first K1 off one of these guys, it was in a much sadder state than when I first saw it, but it was a lovely bike, I had it for four years, and rode it to Bathurst in 1983 to watch the late, great Roger Freeth win the TT on his Macintosh Suzuki GSX1100, man, that was a beautiful beast, for sure!

I tell you what mate, you design an oil cooler adapter for your Beeza, and I'll machine it up for you! I might want a ride on it though, Cheers, Terry.  ;D ;D

Beezas good to 60 mph but is not made to compete with trucks on the freeway at 140 kph. I toyed with the idea of a oil cooler when I adapted a Norton filter to it but decided that as the bike doesn't like those sustained speeds (vibration like you wouldn't believe), I'd use it as a local bike.
You should see the look on some of these "crotch rocket" pilots when they have this noisy old beast up their pipes through the twisties.

Actually Brooksey, Spearey is from Dubbo, the incest capital of Australia, their motto is "The family that plays together, stay's together!

The best "spare" plate I had was one from WA, I got done for speeding on my waterbottle and the Victorian cop let me off! I tell you what, you send me a QLD plate and I'll send you a VIC plate, and we'll see who goes to jail first! Cheers, Terry. ;D

If I ever get my sh*t together & get an up to date computer I'll do some pix of "the egg" (check out the shape of the crankcase on a unit construction BSA)
