550F flasher relay ??
« on: September 03, 2005, 05:18:22 PM »
while installing my new front signals I popped the flasher relay becuase I was trying to find which of the 3 wires on the new signals to use.  Anyway, went to Advance Auto and the only 2 prong flasher unit they had was a larger round type. I picked it up $3 and installed it.  Figure I needed to test if it in fact was the relay.  It worked like a charm and I managed to get it to fit in the rectangle stock rubber mount location for now.  I'm going to goto the local bike place and see if they have smaller rectangle motorcycle (I guess) type flasher relays.

Anyone using plain old auto round relay?

Yep.  Don't waste yer money.

Works better than original, and since my rubber mount was already broken she's just hanging by the wires.

Check it flashes ON first. I used a 2-prong electronic flasher that flashed fine but when I activated the signal it started up OFF. This is a small thing I guess, but when doing lane changes that 1/2 second wait for the signasl to light up was frigging annoying.
I use a 3-terminal electronic flasher now, I assume that the extra ground wire lets it start up ON. Probably lots of 2-terminal ones do too, but mine didn't.

I use the round one, it fits in my rubber mount, kinda had to stretch it a bit though. Works great.

Same deal here, just had to stretch out the mount alittle.  I priced the rectangle one at servicehonda.  retail 15 bucks.  I'll stick with the round one.

What is with the extra ground wire though.  Should we be using a 3 wire one.  2 wire was what was in there, 3rd wire hanging.

The original flashers on the US market bikes were 2 terminal devices and the 3rd (green - ground) wire was just left hanging there. If you look at the wiring diagrams for other markets, it was sometimes used. I have no idea what the requirement or functional differences might be, between the flashers supplied to us and some other parts of the world - mostly Europe.
I usually use the auto store 2 wire (so-called heavy duty or towing) flashers, mostly because I have a small stock of them from the old days when I owned a shop which installed trailer hitches.
The third wire is certainly useful if you want to go with an electronic flasher, which is something I've been thinking about. I just haven't bothered with it because my personal situation is not allowing me very much free time recently.

I got a new auto flasher and when I tried to use it after hooking all three wires up, it blew the main fuse. Left the green unplugged and it worked just fine.
DONT USE THE GREEN! You dont need it.
