'76 cb550 trans mainshaft oil seal leak???
« on: July 22, 2008, 08:36:18 AM »
Previous to my owning the bike an o-ring chain was installed and it cut through the 34X8mm Needle bearing seal situated behind the drive sprocket. Does anyone know if  I have to crack the cases to replace this seal? If not what is a practicle method of removal? I am a bit of a newbie, but by no means incapable of getting er done. Just looking for some pointers. The Mechanics at the two local Honda shops are in their 20's and haven't a clue.

Cases have to be split to remove that bearing holder....there is a dowel locator pin that it rests within. Complete teardown to remove that mainshaft and get that bearing off the end.

Sorry :(

Thanks, I'll save that for the winter. for now I 'll replace the chain and use some gasket sealer to cover the pin hole.

Your hard part will be getting a new plug, might have to settle for a used one from another motor as last i heard they had been discontinued

Found one on the shelf 751 Motorsports in Apex, NC. Gary's been there for decades and is 6 min. from my house.

Just shows its worth checking the local guy first, when i was doing it we regularly used to buy an "extra" of what we saw go wrong the first time if we thought it could happen again
