hello from illinois
« on: June 27, 2008, 06:42:48 PM »
been reading this forum for a while, finally decided to join. found it to be very helpful so far. ive got a '75 cb550f and i ride it every day, but lately its sprung an oil leak. i was riding with my old lady and stopped to get some fuel and noticed that the back tire was a lot shinier than normal. the leak seems to be stemming from the trans. any thoughts as to where it could be coming from?

Welcome to the forum. Although I wouldn't know where to start with your particular problem, I'm sure one of the more experienced members will get interested soon and it'll be fun and games from then until you get it fixed.

Enjoy

What size drive chain is on there?  Is it an o-ring chain or non o-ring?  If it is an o-ring chain and you did not compensate for the thicker chain (spacers on the front and rear sprocket) then you very well could have worn a hole in the side of your engine case.  Oh, and hey from another guy from Illinois w/ a '75 CB550F.

naw it just started spraying all over the back end but it seems to have stopped since i cleaned her out a little. had to get a new innertube because my tire went flat whilst going 70 or so on the interstate. very scary. sorry about not having pictures ill get them up once i get the chance. its kind of a resto thing for me. lots of rust. hopefully before and afters will be up soon.

edit:

i belive its non o-ring.
