Hello from MINNESOTA
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:01:39 PM »
Hello all,
I am Ben from Minnesota. I just purchased a 1978 Honda CB750 over the weekend. It runs and drives BUT it only idles with the choke out all the way and only if im reving it. I bought it from a guy who said he drove it last year, but its been sitting since then. Does this sound like it needs a carb clean?

thank you!

Welcome to the board! Yes it sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned but first try a little seafoam in the gas and maybe it will clear up by itself.
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.

Hello Ben!

I have a 78 CB750F.
Our bikes are pretty similar. I just got mine in april (my 2nd sohc). I just rebuilt the carbs and i'm waiting on main jets to reinstall them.

sounds like your could use a good blast. Try a heavy dose of seafoam like aaron said.
Its also possible that you need to turn the idle speed up. There is a little thumb knob under you tank on the carbs. Clockwise to tun up the idle (when sitting on the bike it will be turning the top to the left as it will be backwards. give it a try after the bike has warmed up.

Welcome!

Welcome Ben...you are at the right spot.  You are lucky that your bike was run last year and not sitting for many years like many here.  Actually, my 1970 sat for 17 years before I got it a year ago.  Don't forget to give it a good oil change and shine her up...then send us pics.  We love pics of these vintage bikes here.  Good luck and let us know of your progress.

Yes, do a carb clean, remove and clean the slow jets with a small piece of wire. The slow jets on those carbs are very important to get super clean or it will never run correctly.
Good luck with the bike.   ;)
When the majority of the United States population get to be 70 years old, they will finally realize what is really important. And by then it'll be too late.
