That's all well well and good, but what about the '77-'78 550 F?  I'm going to ask him.

Hold on, Ecosse has a thought... shhh or you'll scare it away!

What if we as a group 'petitioned' the company so to speak by showing them a potential customer base for specific side covers.

Another words, if a sufficient number (collectively) indicated there was demand for certain items maybe they might be more inclined to crank some out. I understand the cost/ benefit ratio concept but if they were on the fence this might tip the scales.

As for my application I'll have to look closer because I don't think those 550 'F' covers look like my K0 covers.

Ecosse, please believe me that 550K0 covers are identical to 500 covers, look on inside of originals and you will see a "323" embossed in there and he does the 500 covers.

Bryanj,

I don't doubt the commonality between 500/550 but I thought had read from informed sources here that the difference was between K and F body work.  But if this company has listed their part incorrectly as an F when it's K then I'm set.

Right now I'm some distance from my 550 so I'll have to compare the pic you provided and my covers.

Where's Two Tired? ::)

BTW: Still thinking a group voice to manufacturers can be influential.

In this same vein...there's a small company on eBay that makes foams for the K0 seats, ran across it yesterday. I sent an e-mail about a K1 or K2-style foam, which was in between the ducktail seat and the K3-later seats, had a deep cutout for your thighs when you stand over the seat, and the top line of the seat cover dipped down with it to narrow the stance (Honda was responding to complaints of the seat-sidecovers being too wide). The company said they were waiting to see if enough requests came in to them before making these foams, too.

Quess I'll have to make myself some more eBay names and ask them again...  ::)

Hondaman,

I'd like to know more about the foam people. Still thinking about recontouring a stock seat pan to a SportBuddy style and wonder if they might do such a thing or even replace my stock foam with fancy 21st. century stuff.

EDIT: OK disregard this. They likely wouldn't be interested in doing what I had in mind. My head is deep in the fog due to allergies today. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

If anyone knows for sure that they have covers for a '77 550K, please let me know.  I have Meiler (sp?) covers on now.  The right is badly cracked and barely hanging on!

The 500/550 side cover for the K model are the same molding from 71 to 76.
They are different from the F models of 75-77.  Both in shape and mounting pin orientation.

The 77-78 K models have their own shape (similar to the 71-76 K models) and mounting pin arrangement, different from the other models.

Perhaps of interest, the F side cover pins will engage the 77-78 K model frame mounts correctly.  You can swap them, but they have a different shape than the originals.

They answered me back about the side covers; as far as they know all side covers made for all F's and K's are identical, as well as for all motorcycles ever made. EVER!  Okay, I made that last part up.  I've got a dect pair I think they may be able to use for molds if necessary.  Let's hope the conversation gets that far.

Thanks TT, It's not important to me that they are the stock shape, just that they look decent.  The current cracked cover is close to flapping in the wind!  Think I'll order up a set of  the 500/550F covers.  I better get fresh rubbers for the frame mounts too, the Maier moly bolts were not kind to the originals!

The seller lists the one set as being for K1 through K6 models and it has the indentation for the side emblem. But if I am not mistaken (which is very likely), isn't that indentation only really correct for the K1 and K2 models? Later didn't the K3 through K6 side emblems change shape to include a square around them?

Here is cover he is advertising for K1 through K6 CB750's

Now it looks as if these K1 and K2 emblems would fit:

But not these K3 to K6 emblems:

Good chance I will order these as I have a K1 and they look correct, but those restoring K3 through K6's may wish to ask for a correct replica. Unless of course I am wrong. I am new to these CB's so that is very possible.

You are correct, Venturous. The K1/K2 have been almost impossible to obtain since the 1980s, which is one reason why I'm so jazzed about these. Mine have been in terrible condition since the early '90s, and the ever-popular K3-later style seemed to be all that anyone could get. Come to think of it, I didn't even look on this website past the discovery of the K1/K2 cover, which I immediately ordered...  ::)  I've actually seen "restos" of K1/K2 with the later sidecovers, but correct tank scheme. It always looked funny to me, but the work was often being done by someone who wasn't tere, then, so they didn't know. Honda's literature is highly suspect, as they are more concerned about fit & function than particular cosmetics, because they are in the business of selling bikes, more than anything else. In business ventures, the Japanese seldom wax historic (like the "first dollar" you often see in American business headquarters, hanging on their walls).
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Ecosse, remember this is a UK company and over here we kept with the 500 till 1975 and they were all sold as Honda CB 500 F(our) no matter what the model. A CB550 K was the 77/78 K3

Bryanj, Thanks for clearing that up. I forgot and frankly wasn't very clear about differences between UK and US models.

I'm just relieved someone produces these items in the first place.

Those badges are black plastic ?!  The originals are chrome-ish and black and white.  Is there any way to make them look original?  I'm not a stickler for being perfectly original but what's the point of getting them if they are all black.... on the other hand, you probably want to fill the indentation with something
