Actual capacity of oil tank. Making a custom one.
« on: July 24, 2008, 01:25:09 PM »
I picked up a 3.5" tube and decided to make a custom oil tank. I see the engines take 3.7L total. converted it to a volume in cubic inches and with my determined diamter, i can find the length needed.

how much oil actually sits in the tank? i read somewhere that a third is actually in the engine during use. just need clearification so i don't make it too small but if it's too big, i'll just ditch it.

Hear i go being a pain.
The cooler the motor will not necessarily give you more mi. It sort of depends, if you live in AZ i would say ya go big and put a cooler on it. If you live in Seattle i would say no, it will take for ever to get you bike up to running Temp and get it to stay there if you are on open road.
If you have allot of Mi on your bike and it is broken in at a certain average temp that might be hotter than what you will have after adding cooling mods it might not run up to snuff. The motor material expands with temp. I'm sure you know all that.

The one i made and have on my Racer holds 4 quarts, when i change the oil i put in 3.5 qt, i think the manual asks for 3qt (I would check that i don't look at it much any more) with each oil change. I run an oil cooler but i have a cover that i put on it during the winter so my bike will warm up and stay at temp.

Also if you run a 5qt tank, the motor will only pump X amount through it. Just don't make it less than the total capacity given for the motor and make sure your hose that draws oil to the motor is at the bottom. I would also put in a a In-Line Oil Filter. That will give you more Mi on the motor.
Good luck to you.

Good luck.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

The stock CB750 tanks after K0 will hold 4.25 quarts. They will leak some out of the breather at that volume, though, until it drops to 4.1 quarts. When the engine is shut off, then drained immediately, there is approximately 0.5 quart in the engine at that moment, if the oil pump is new: typically on our aged bikes you will find closer to 1 quart down there, as the pump loses pickup efficiency.

i may have screwed the pooch on this one. pipe was only 11.25" long which makes it to carry shy of 2 quarts. i was going to have an oil cooler installed between the tank and the engine and that may give an extra .5 quart capacity. guess this won't work.
