float question
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:19:23 PM »
hey all, just got back in town and with rain etc. i hadn't ridden my 750 for about 4 days got on and she wouldn't start.  i'm normally pretty religious about using the petcock but i had left it open the whole time and had a small puddle beneath the overflow tubes.  yanked the plugs and they were all wet, gave them a light scrub with a brass brush and got it running, though rough.  it sputtered, missed, back fired for about 4 miles. when i got it home  i shut off the petcock and ran it dry and let it sit over night.  has been running fine ever since.  what happened?

Were all four plugs like that, wet, etc? Good habit, as you know, to close the petcock, but if one forgets, the last line of defense is the float valves. If the floats happen to have sticky pivot pins or posts, they may not respond correctly. This might go unnoticed while riding as the vibration usually keeps things moving. Another possibility is debris on the float valve seats and they are not sealing.

Yep something made your float valves stay wide open in the carbs.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Better check your oil for gas contamination.
