500 Carb Mixture Adjustment?
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:28:36 PM »
Where is the mixture adjustment on the 500 carbs?  #1 is a little lean...

Also, there is a screw on top of each carburetor that has a slotted head, indicating it's used to adjust something, and two nuts on it (locking it in place).  Also has a thin metal "strap" that connects the same adjustment together on the 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 carburetors.  What is this? (The double nuts were a little loose and I need to tighten them up, but just wondering what it was).

Mixtur screws are on the side of thr carb at an angle unless it is a 77/78 K3 in which case they are verticle underneath at the front.

Those screws on top should have a screwdriver slot on the bolt with one nut and are for syncing the carbs

If the lock nuts for the slide adjusters (top of the carbs) are loose, then your carbs need to be re-synchronized before you tighten them back up.

K.  The mixture screws... do they adjust air flow or gas flow?  I'd assume gas, but the manual calls them "air" screws.  And which way is which (clockwise/anticlockwise... just to be sure).

Could carbs being out of synch make the bike idle really out of wack?  It was doing moderately ok, and then today I took it out for a spin, and no matter how I finely I turn the idle adjuster, it wants to do either 2500rpm or none at all.

They adjust air flow through the idle jet. You can easily
remember that because the screws are on the intake side
of the carbs. So, turn them IN to idle richer, OUT to idle lean.

Oh yeah, definitely. Synch those things ASAP.

Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.
