was i right or just plain dumb?
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:36:42 PM »
i finally had some interest in the 750f frame i've been trying to sell but the prospective buyer wanted me to just cut the neck off and send that and the title to him. i thought about it then replied that this was a super nice straight and rust free frame and i really didnt want to cut it up. he said he understood but was willing to go pretty high money wise and it was my pocketbook not his. was i stupid to not accept the large amount of cash to cut up a really nice frame? opinions please

Yeah, I think I'd have sold it.

I never have any qualms about selling my stuff.  You wanna take my labor of love and butcher it all up?  Have at it, just as soon as the check clears...  ;D

I wouldn't have sold it.  Helping a chop shop do business is just a immoral as actually doing it.

I got a 1985 Yamaha VTX1300 from a guy that charged me ,...., well nothing really.  I just had to pick it up.  Pretty much everything is in great shape, except for the frame.  So to parallel this story with your question, my frame on the Yamaha was junk (modified and repaired), so I ditched the project, because of the frame.  Hey, if I can't tell whether or not the bike will crack in half or not going down the highway, then forget it.  So the frame is worthwhile, and if I had one for my Yamaha, I'd probably rebuild it.  Well worth the money anyway.  So in short, sell it, theres more out there for sure.  And if someone sees a diamond in the rough, and wants to pay, well ok then, there you have it sir.

Sort of reminds me of my last house, a labor of time/money/love. Spent untold time restoring the place back to original. The buyer had seriously trashed it within 2 weeks, but because it was no longer mine I had to let them bad thoughts go.

Same w the bike frame, almost. In my experience if someone is merely looking for a steering head VIN plate, usually it is to hide a stolen mc.

Over here it is a pain in the back to register a bike with lost papers. If the previous owner is unknown and there is no evidence of whose the bike owner is -even if it is you who stored the bike 20 years ago and lost the papers in the interim-. What most people do, when the bike is worth keeping, is to find a registered frame and swap all the parts. I guess it gives less work to just remove the fork and tank, cut the neck and weld another one -if you have the skill obviously-.

People here don't waste the time stoling old bikes. It takes the same time to steal an old bike than a new CBR600RR, but the outcome is quite different.

I don't know what would have I done. I also hate when things that are serviceable and useable are bought to be trashed. It all depends on how attached to them I am. I remember calling a guy who was selling a road bicycle real cheap. It turned out that it was a big size, to big for me. I told him I didn't care, I could always use the wheels, pedals etc. The guy told me he didn't want to sell it if it was going to be used for parts.
