 :D :D

Or maybe they're afraid if they do it 'wrong' the mean ol' motorcycle hoodlum will come after them.

I've waved to them too by accident; no return gestures yet.

I draw the line at Whizzers though!!

A psychologist here at the hospital just bought a 250cc Vespa. Cool looking little scooter, very ols school classic lines. He asked me one day after he had been riding it to work for a couple of weeks just what was this with people on bikes waving at each other. Told him, with a wink,  it was a psychological thing.

As for what you ride making a difference, I've been rotating my rides lately. The Valkyrie, the GL1000 WIng, the VF700 Interceptor, the VTR250 interceptor. Normally, riding to work, I am wearing the same gear. Have only noticed minor differences in "the wave". Folks seem less likely to initiate the wave if you are on a different style/category of bike. Whether it was crusier waving at crotchrocket or crotch rocket waving at cruiserdidn't matter. If you were on the same style of bike they were more likely to initiate the wave. However, they all seem to respond about the same if you are the one to initiate the wave regardless of the type of bike you are on.

The old GoldWing with all its funky '70's bates bags and Wixom fairing seems to get the most waves.

I did find one outfit that seemed to generate the most waves, from other bikers and even pedestrians!! Was working outside at the farmhouse and my son in town called and needed me to run in to town to help him with something. So I just grabbed an open face helmet, jumped on the old Wing and rode into to town. All the bikes I met waved and smiled, even a couple of hardcore choppers sitting at the stop light with me smiled and nodded. Going thru my sons neighborhood, even some folks walking down the sidewalk waved. THought maybe everyone was just having a good day or something. Pulled in to my son's driveway and he walks up as I am parking the bike. He's laughing out loud and makes some comment about old country folk just don't get to the big city often, eh?

Then it dawned on me. First, off, I have a full grey beard and about a 14 inch grey ponytail. Then , like I said I was out working when he called. Didn't ever cross my mind what I was wearing or to go and change. Had on an old t-shirt, lace-up work boots, and a well worn pair of OshGosh bib-overalls. I guess it was quite the site to see this old grey haired codger in bib-overalls riding a 30 y/o Wing. ;D ;D
A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

From an age demographics, I have notice the older the rider the better chances they wave.  I have a joke with my dad that is, "Look at me, arthritis hasn't won yet, I'm still riding!."  ;D

"Rice Rocket"? What's a Rice Rocket?

Got Rice?

Speaking of scooters, I have always wondered what is the proper HD protocol for waving at a Harley Topper:

Yes, Harley did produce a scooter in the 1960's. A friend of mine just restored one and is in the process of getting it on the road.

I've had numerous pull-back waves.
I think our older styling confuses the yuppies.

On the scooter note:
Why so harsh to scooter riders?  They have two wheels, too!
They might be extremely goofy, but I wave at all of them!

I think you're right about the old styling throwing off the untrained eye. My '88 Honda Shadow got many waves from the life style bunch.

I some times pick on the scoots but they're cool too. In the '50's they were really in; Rock Hudson and Gregory Peck were just a couple of the cool guy jet setters seen on them. Would I trade my CB for one?

Uh, no.

It seems to depend on where you are.

In NC everyone seemed to wave.

Here in Northeast PA you will get the wave from 1 in 20 Harley people. Go a bit further west to Central PA and the wave comes back.

I used to wave first, but since moving here I have mostly stopped that. If I'm feeling saucy, sometimes when coming up on a few Harleys I'll start waving frantically just to annoy the  "orange county chopper" crew.

Wow, that's interesting. I think I live about an hour from you, and I get the wave from most HD riders.

P.S. When my bike hits the point of reliability, which will happen soon, mebbe we should hook up for a ride.

"Rice Rocket"? What's a Rice Rocket?
As I recall, the term "Rice Rocket" was first used when referring to a bike introduced back in the late 1960s.  Maybe you have heard of it, it was a 1969 Honda CB750?

Thanks Oldfordguy, but in the meantime I did my reasearch on wikipedia and here is the popular definition of rice rocket;

A rice rocket is a slang term applied to Japanese-made sports bikes. The term is derived from the speed of the motorcycle (rocket), and the "Japanese" origin of the vehicles (a reference to cultural and historical importance of the rice crop in Japan). The term is sometimes used derogatorily, implying that American and/or European vehicles are superior to Japanese made vehicles, but, as with many slang terms, may also be used neutrally or even as a term of affection, depending on the speaker and context.

Rice rocket is also an American slang for imported Japanese cars often modified, customized, and tuned for performance or racing use. The cars often have modifications such as cut springs to give the car a lower stance, body kits, spoilers, lighting modifications, custom paint and/or decal designs, rims and loud mufflers. The vehicles usually have small displacement engines (usually 4-cylinders) which require additional performance modifications to get them to be adequate competitors. In the most advanced stages, 'rice rocket' vehicles will be given supplemental power via forced induction, most commonly a turbocharger system.

Additionally, rice rocket is sometimes used synonymously with the term rice burner.

Now I can sleep restfully.

I always wave, no matter who it's to. There is one guy I always see around the area on an older HD that never waves back, I make a special point to give him a super enthusiastic wave lol. My main transportation is a 08 Mini Cooper S, we all wave at each other...weird but a trend i'll keep going so i'm not the guy they talk about not waving on the Mini forums lol.
