o-rings
« on: July 27, 2008, 11:55:46 AM »
Hi,

I rebuilt my carbs then found that I had to take them apart again. The float settings were wrong. Now my new o-rings that I installed to seal the float bowl won't go back in. I tried freezing them--no luck.

I'm wondering if there is a way to find just the float bowl o-rings without getting two entirely new kits.

Thanks.

I'm wondering too if the hardware store or auto parts store might have something that'll work.

It has to be gas resistant though, right?

If you know the size of the rings, or can measure it, you can order them from industrial suppliers like McMaster Carr for pretty cheap.  If yours are the same size as the 550 ring, I can give your the part # if you'd like.

I had the same problem.
I used super glue to hold them in the bowl.
Then i trimmed the excess off and dabbed some super glue where the two ends met.

No leaks yet.

Some day my 550 project will get unstuck. So I would like the part #
Hi rchrdms
"It has to be gas resistant though, right?" Not judging by the o-rings in my CB400F1 carbs. Did you let them dry over night? The o-rings in by CB400F1 needed a good day to return to the size that would fit into the groove in the float bowl.

Part  number is 02050094 ordered from MSC Industrial Supply (sorry, not McMaster).  Cost was $5.91 for 10 viton rings.

To determine the size I needed, I just ran a piece of solder inside the groove and measured that.

FWIW, I found out that brake cleaner -alcohol- swelled the rubber boots of my brake calipers. When they dried they returned to the original size, but it was spooky to see a rubber part growing almost double.

I didn't have any issue installing the bowl o-rings in my CB350twin. They fitted perfectly.

Thanks for all the responses.

I got them in OK by twisting them slightly by hand. That seemed to take up the slack.

Now the problem is poor low speed operation. It was running badly at high speed before, but I found the problem (loose main jet needle) and fixed it.

I haven't done anything to this lately so it must be a problem with my rebuild or adjustments, right?

Richard

BTW

By poor low speed operation I mean it stalls, is hard to start, and surges at idle. Weird.
