Preserving 4 into 4 exhaust
« on: June 07, 2013, 06:19:45 AM »

Cb 750 341 pipes
Given the current state of replacement parts, I was wondering first:

How do I care for the solid pipes that I have on my rider?
Take them off each year and wax them?
Reroute the battery breather hose?
?????.

Has anyone tried filling or submerging a 341 pipe in evaporust ( or some other product) to stop the development of rust inside a pipe? Will it just burn off from the heat?

Thanks all

Take them off to clean them often, and keep the drain holes clean & open. When you go out for a ride don't just do short jonts that won't burn off condensation, heat them up.

I have a near perfect set from 74, the only issue is the chrome has thinned/yellowed. Finding anyone to chrome used exhaust or affording it is questionable!

I only use acid free batteries so I don't have to worry about that breather issue. Might want to consider that route. I have seen that acid mess up many a pipe so well worth the cost to get a different battery.

Same, I have been using a trugel battery.  More expensive, but nothing compared to a ruined set of 341s

Steel weldments rust from the inside out.
You can stop corrosion by keeping them dry and seal the ends and drain hole to keep oxygen out.

No, don't keep them sealed,  all that will do is trap any moisture present. Like said before, when you ride, get the pipes up to temp, keep the drain holes clear, and don't cover the bike in plastic or store in a damp area.

Consider adding 2 stroke marine oil to your gas tank each fillup (1 oz. per gallon). Many do it to protect against the effects of E10 gas but it should give a small layer of protection to exhaust parts also.

+1
Or pour some used oil in them slosh it around and let it burn off while on a nice long ride. FOrms a crust inside that is moisture and acid proof.
