CB500 PICKUP NONRUNNIN PROJECT
« on: July 27, 2008, 11:14:04 PM »
Hello,

Just a little insight,  I got this for a little cash..I was looking for any CB500 to bob out.  I under stand classic and the need to keep it OG,  I have a 51 Cadi Fisher Coupe 6VLT Stock and understand the feelin of a classic ride.  I figure this would be a good project to work on and get an idea on Honda bikes.  I will end up taking the Cafe seat off later and run a short seat and black out alot of the chrome.  Like her as is now and will rock the OG tank and keep her hear and soul,  I like that look. For now I just need her running and see what I got...the guy wasn't too sure what was going on he didn't get her going and gave up and told me what ever I wanted to hear to sale it.  Well the fun starts.....

Cleaned the tank,  had lots for rushed little rock size bits and they had the petcock clogged, reason from my question the other day on the Flow.  I had it cleared and blown out today...getting nice and correct flow, Thanks to TwoTired.  Set the plugs,  fixed the wires and housings per shot to hell with duck tape..still has little but clean contact now and will order new later...just staying under a budget on this one.

Cleaned the gas lines and adjusted the carbs as much as I could with out taking off.  Checked and adjusted points and coil seem to be working okay.  Bled breaks and now know why he had no fluid in system when paid for....locked up breaks/pistons...need to rebuild or get new set/cking rates and what I have to work with.

So once all was cleaned up and btry was charged good....she wouldn't turn over again and again with start up button...checked all ends and still nothing...ended up spraying in carb spray per gas lines all checked out....just wanted a spark.  after a while of this and that and loads over checking..she kick started over a few times once battery had it and I put more carb spray in and then had it running for a bit and then it grabbed gas and was running off gas, not just start up juice.  high five myself..good feelin'

Once I had it running,  I reved up the throttle to get it going and tried to push any life back in her.  Noticed a little bit of white smoke out the pipe and then when I lower the throttle she was cutting off...and I had to reved her up to keep her running.  Might need to rebuild these carbs as they are not adjusted right nor are the floaters acting correctly from what little I was to gather today.

I will take it apart and see what I have going on and go from here...below are the picks I got today...Just broke it down a little and did a soft tune up.

Will update more as it comes along, thanks for dropin in.

Looks like it'll be a killer ride.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Well, if you have a working mono-shock conversion, you have quite a nice piece of bike there.  However, the added custom-ness of it all may give some headaches.  Looks pretty trick, best of luck.

So I am still trying to get a down day to split the carbs up...for now I finally was able to get my start up day ( kept turning off once let back on the throttle) on you tube to share the sound of the bike - not sure if the carbs are just out of sink or the jetting is off...but either way I am still going to take appart to see what I am working with.  Got quoted 550 for both rebuild and rejetting by a Honday Shop in Long Beach. www.lossaengineering.com after seeing them at Queen Mary bike show, Nice Racers with this guys.   But I am going to try do this on my end and if all else fails..Shop it.  I just would feel better knowing I did it and what I am working with, with out the extra cash out of pocket. I have time.. But if I am getting way over head with troubles,,,550 might look really nice and knowing a Pro has it dialed in right.

More to come......for now the start up,

Cheers,

yeah, you wanne clean your carb's,sounds like the idle jets are plugged..
theres tons of info on how to clean them here...just use search...
dont spend the 550 on the stealership...they dont know what they are doing...
its a simple task, time consuming, but you said you had time...
if you can, just take pictures while you take it apart, might be handy for reassembly..
search carb cleaning AND benchsyncronicing...

I would love some more details on that monoshock.  That bike looks sweet how it is.  Please don't chop that one up for a bobber.  I'm all for choppers and bobbers but someone spent some time getting that swinger setup working.

Yeah,  I will take it apart on my end and post up pixs to get some insight. Thanks for the good ear. I have looked at all the forums with Carb details and got great details / input from others with issues and what not,,  I know this won't be easy but rewarding in the end.  The site is really helpful and a great way to get some details you need and feed back.

The Mono Shock is sick and for sure I am going to rock it and not cut it out,  might just change seat way later ( not a big issue now) or keep and hide all the electric in it.  The great work is the main reason I picked it up as is and not running.  If I had got a duster, I would have done a bobber but I like this one.  I will post better pixs of Mono so can try to dupe by eye.

More to come and please feel free to give your insight,  I am new on Honda bikes and can use the help with dead ends.

Thanks for lookin in.

So checkit!  I got a day to work on the bike and went for the carbs and breaks.  The breaks are all shot and pistons not working after working on...really could use the help on ID or set up or any info per I need new breaks or rock it old chopper style with the back only..F-that!!

I was wrong on my earlier trail when I said wheels were Kawi but they are Suki- I must have had too much gas fumes when working the gas tank.. :o  so if anyone knows the set up on the wheels or can give me an idea of what breaks to pick up or if there is a standard on these Suki wheels 16inch?  Its a simple up and down bolt on?  so thanks in advance if you can point me in the right direction.

I have pics but yeah...not so bright on getting my CRS / pixs images down solid..my cam is always taking huge img and cant attch. pix edit doesn't let me make imgs smaller- but if you know how - open for suggestions.  I just know how to trim but no help.  so I have add most of my pics for now on the link here

www.frappr.com/cali500

sorry if out of line but till I get my gears in order...this link will do.  I was stoked on my first youtube and it worked.

The carbs were easy and not alot of work, to my suprise.  I am glad I opened them up because the last of the carbs had the floater upside down ( all maybe but 1 out of 4,,sh!t looks off! ) .. ...never had gas running out but today it was alot.  so funny how things work out....but I know now why..

The main jets had little Suzy's rubberbands for her braces as  rubber o rings?? what is up with that?? does anyone know whysomeone would use little rubberbands?  The looked like rubber melts per the gas contact.  I don't think they have kits with them and wonder if the PO was Mickey Mousing things?  the good work must have been the PO / PO cause the current fixes are crap.

All I need now is the main Jet o rings.  do you need just the one or two?? don't know per the braces rubber bands were two on each main jet.

Do I need to get the Honda Carb Gasket kit or full kit with all jets and parts? or can you go to a local hardware or auto parts store?  how about KEYSTER CARB KIT???  some member said they got all 4 for 51.00 - sounds too good?  but in insight would be good.  It wouldn't hurt to put in all new gear, just not sure on the price being too good to be true.

The carb back together after cleaned and blowed out but with-out the o-rings on the main jets. ( I know. =( but   just to please me on my long day of work and needed to hear it turn over...I put it all back and guess what....the thing....didn't turn over again and again but a little here and then there....what the *&^$%^$#%%^*( - lovin her more and more in my head...Geisha girl -COME ON!!!  - so I figure..it's not getting gas...the floaters were working per it didn't leak--I guess upside down ones don't  ;D

so I have been think that the fuel line had the chrome fuel filters and pinched the lines...so I pulled the tanks and ran gas in all bowls from the lines straight up and plug them with screws...I know Mickey Mouse sh!t talker....well I just need to get the girl to drink..so drum roll.........She fired up and idled nice.  I reved it up and it SOUNDS SICK AS HELL.  I will put up a YOUTUBE once I get the chance.

Still need to work on the lines and figure out new path or longer lines or outtie the fuel filters?  Once up and running I can see how the Tran is working- Great!!!  ::)

Sorry for the BOOK but stoked:
Today was a great day on the bike and working with my hands.  SHE'S ALIVE!!  SHE'S ALIVE!!

more to come...for now the progress is on the link mentioned -

Many of us use Photobucket to upload our pics.  Then Photobucket has this thing where you can post a URL link the the photo.  Maybe Frapper has that option.

Okay Check it,

I asked around to some of my SUKI kats and SCHOFELL84 was on point....  I think and about 90% certain this is a 86 or 87 GSXR 400 - Forks / Swaybar in back plus wheels.   I was looking at the break set up and pix on an old 86 and 87 and I think we are on the money.

I was talking to someone and I might have F up on the breaks when I bleed them.  I put in DOT 3 and heard I should have used DOT5 per the DOT 3 and 4 have an acid base that can eat at the O-rings in the piston set up.  in most cases this can cause the piston to not push back.  I am hoping I didn't do that much damage and can still use the ones I have...will keep you posted.  If I am wrong let me know...thxs!

Please feel free to drop lines and give any insight or brain storm with me on these past issues I have mentioned.

The master cylinder seals work fine with DOT3, DOT4, and DOT5.1.  They were designed for DOT3 use.  It does NOT have and acid base.  What fool told you that?  See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brake_fluid

DOT5 is silicone based and there have been multi-page rants about this in this forum.  Silicone base fluid has it's own issues.  I'm not in favor of Silicone base brake fluid because of these, since the development of 5.1 brake fluid.

thanks TT,

yeah,  a fool he must have been per your comments.   thanks for setting me straight and I will look this link up and check the forums on the topic of the different dots....totally forgot to check the forums per it was a SUKI break setup and not Honda, didn't even think!  That's the fool in me.. ;D
