Pictures of what has been happening...
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:26:56 PM »
Had a chance to shoot a couple pictures of my bike as it sits.  I'm stupid-busy traveling and working this summer, but hopefully the bike will come together in short order.  Hope you enjoy, because I do :)

Reminds me of the biker build off episode where billy zane made his exhaust exit from under his seat.  On the trip to the bike show where it was to be judged, he actually lit the seat on fire!

It was so danged funny, cause while he was building it earlier, I told my wife it was going to be a hot seat ride, and needed a heat shield separator, which never even occurred to him, the expert chopper builder. ;D

Ah hah, heat shielding considered and in the works.  I thought about it too, but my first attempt on the undertail (remember me getting torn apart on this forum ;) ) never had a problem with temps, and this version has even more space and airflow underneath.

He's back!!!  Looking good man.  I for one dig the exhaust!

Got any build pics of that tank build?  It almost looks like a backwards 77 tank modified.

Ha ha, your welds were going through hot glue...I'm not even going to ask.  That looks like a 600rr muffler, maybe you could get the heat shield from that as well.
Just call me Timmaaaaay!!!

Good eye fastbroshi.  I don't recall what year, but it was an eBay purchase.  Heat shield doesn't fit unfortunately.  It's pretty tight in there.  The plan for the heat shield is a pairing of homemade aluminum sheeting (fabricated) and adhesive backed heat shield (the kind you can put on the inside of body work.)  I've tossed around the idea of corrugating the aluminum, but I doubt I'll even need to do that.

As for the hot glue...I began mocking the tank up by trimming and fitting cardboard sections up against the bottom portion of the tank (I already trimmed the top half off.)  Gluing the pieces up as templates, I was able to determine the remainder of the tank that needed to be trimmed, and how the assembly should go.  I was lazy (obvisouly) and didn't clean anything off ANY of the metal surfaces.  Not paint, not clearcoat, not hot glue, not rust, not anything.  I just turned the welder to max amperage with .030 fluxcore (ran out of gas) at mid-range wire speed and went away at it.  I'm planning on (once it is welded tight) flushing the inside with a tasty menu of strippers (chemical ones, not pretty ones) and then doing a POR-15 tank seal kit.

I see he has found the perfect solution to those troublesome carbs too!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

forget the carbs...Open the petcock, and the dripping fuel gets blown toward the intake ports by the turbulent air, and it will be the perfect atomization of fuel with air to create ideal combustion :)

Isn't Billy Zane the same guy you made a kick only harley with three chains instead of a belt and couldn't get his bike to start? it also ate every pair of pants he rode the bike in. I've also seen a bike he built with a one gallon gas tank that could barley make it from gas station to gas station. I hate that guy, He makes the OCC guys look good.

REALLY like that tank, and the way the rest of the bike is coming together.

But for future reference, when building a tank, shortcutting the welding is usually the last thing you want to do unless you like leaks! Hope the POR15 works out for you though  ;)

What kind of welder do you have that didn't make complete swiss cheese of that 18/16ga sheet metal at full tilt on .030 flux core?

I know not the best approach for the tank, but...

I will be coming back in to lay a thoroughly penetrated bead on every seam, it will be leak test, and any final spots can either be welded again, brazed shut, or I have even heard of people using body lead (old school body filler) to fill in any seams.  It will be tight and without leaks before the POR-15 goes in.

My ideal approach would have been to use Aluminum rather than steel.  Steel can be great, but this tank is going to be rather heavy (16ga.)  Original tanks are stamped, so thinner gauges can be used, maintaining strength without adding weight.  But Aluminum...lighter and just as durable.  Anyhoo...

Looks great, and it has a cool design. You have your work cut out for ya. I'm interested to see how that exhaust will sound.

What is that black thing mounted on your fab'ed clutch cover?

Just thought I would interject quickly (thread jacking from myself?)  I've wanted to do a modern fork conversion for a while, but don't have the money.  Well, I got bored (and lazy) and did a crappy PS/AI of my bike with a buell XB front end and some sort of sportbike rear section.  This way I could switch between a rear seat pad and a rear cowl, and still maintain the quasi sport-bike-street-standard-naked bike I love.

I've been putting together the parts for a modern front end. I love the look. I have to say that I REALLY like that buell front end though...

Got my gears turning now.
