Trans popped out of gear... trouble?
« on: July 29, 2008, 07:45:43 AM »
I have a '71 CB750 with unknown work done to the engine (pulls off the end of the tach). The other day on my way home from Carlisle my buddy and I had pulled off on a pulloff area on the highway to have a smoke and rehydrate. When we went to leave I pulled out really hard on the throttle. At some poin t in 1st the tire started spinning, I let off a bit and it hooked, popping the trans into a false neutral.  Let off the throttle, shifted to second and got on the gas again and it popped out again. Then seemed fine. It has popped out of gear a couple times before, usually when upshifting and hard on the throttle.

I'm worried I may eventually break something. What could be causing this? Worn shift forks? Are there any weak parts in the CB750 transmission that can be upgraded? I'm thinking with how this engine performs it may be prudent to go through the transmission at the end of the season and ensure things are up to snuff before I really break something and blow the engine. I worry after reading the post from the other fellow who snapped the dogs off one of his gears. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Could be worn shift forks, weak drum stopper detent spring, worn drum, worn gears or a combo of a bunch of worn parts.

Also, my (350) did this when I shifted without the clutch. I shift with the clutch and make sure to roll back the rpm's and it stopped doing it. So make sure you make some gentle shifts and that might stop it.

Some have also said that heavier oil can cause jumping out of gear.

And yes, you could break something. Imagine running at WOT and the tranny jumping out of gear. Either the pistons will start punching the valves or the transmission may decide to jump back in a gear... instantly. These transmissions are strong, but can't take too much of that before the s'plode  ;)
