76' cb750F stuck in first gear
« on: August 08, 2008, 06:43:56 PM »
Hi folks,

You are all always so helpful and knowledgeable that I want to thank you in advance.  My problem is that my bike is stuck in first gear.  The shift lever is just solid and does not move up (i tried bumping the shaft lightly inwards as well as hitting the actual shift lever a little bit harder with a hammer).  I also tried going as fast as I can in first gear and then completely letting off of the throttle in an attempt to get some kind of reaction from the transmission or shift linkage.  I couldn't find any info on this from previous posts.  Your help is much appreciated since without my CB, it is back to riding a bicycle for me.  Thanks again,

dpalm

I had heard if you put the front tire up against a wall rev the engine only a little to keep it running off idle, then pop out the clutch a little it may free it up.

I have heard (yeah I know heard it from a guy that heard it from another type of thing) that there is a spring that has a habit of breaking on the 750's, which makes shifting impossible.
Somthing like this link shows, but his problem was it slippin out of gear

you will have to take the right  side cover of the engine and take a good look at the shifter mechanism, probably broke the spring...

I think if you look at where my thumb is on this pic you can see that spring.  My index finger is pointing at something else, so be sure you are looking at my thumb.  ;D
