Looking into buying a '77 550F...any comments appreciated
« on: July 23, 2008, 09:43:22 AM »
I'm looking into taking the plunge into vintage Honda stuff, there's a 77 550F about an hour away from me that's in my price range. Owner says it's in excellent running condition, but I haven't seen/heard it in person yet.

This would be my first bike, and as a noob I figured I'd run this by you guys first :) Does anything strike you guys as a warning flag or something to look into? I noticed the dent on the gas tank, I can live with that for the time being, hopefully that doesn't mean it was dropped and sustained other damage that's not as apparent. Eventually I'd probably want to get a new tank and have it and the side covers repainted, but that'd be a winter project.

The seller is willing to come down to $1400, and as a broke college student working on a Ramen budget this summer that's about all I can afford. Is that a fair price?

Thanks all in advance, and for putting up with my n00bishness  :P

Seems reasonable to me.
Its a late 77.
76/early 77 were solid colour, thats got 'stripes' on tank
Looks like Lester wheels, not sure what exhaust it is

I think these bikes are good first bikes.
Gets you into the world of riding and wrenching at the same time.

That looks to be in pretty nice shape. If it looks like that in person and runs well I'd say go for it.

Don't forget to budget for gear as well!

Looks like Lester wheels,

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the wheels particularly, I think the spokes used on the earlier models look better, but that kind of stuff can wait :)

Thanks guys for the input.

I've attatched a picture of my stock 77 CB550F.  The mods are; engine guards, windshield, luggage rack, and passenger back rest.

The bike you are looking at, has several mods, wheels, exhaust, seat, luggage rack and backrest.

The seat appears to be from a K model which has a shorter fuel tank than the F models, and this makes it fit poorly.
The tool kit is fitted into the rear of the seat on the F and on a tray in the frame for the K.  I expect you won't be getting a tool kit with the bike and worse, no place to put one when you get it.
The seat should open and close freely, unless your luggage rack prevents it.  The K seat either bends or scuffs the tank badly on the F, if "adjustments" are not made.
The F carbs have the leanest settings of all the 550s, (save the 77-78 K models due to different carbs types).  Simply swapping to low restriction 4 into 1 will result in lean settings.  You should try to determine if the carbs have been adjusted for the replacement exhaust.  If not, you may not be able to drive faster than 80 or 90 MPH, or encounter a lean condition at those speeds.

More important than a tank dent is whether it is clean and rust free inside.

Check to see if it has an oring chain (it should not) and if there are any oil leaks in the front chain sprocket area.  (O ring chains can chew up cases/seals.)

Other than that, it looks like a pretty clean example.  $1400 is OK if you want to and can drive it as is.   But, if you are going to make changes, add that to your cost of ownership.   The hack adaptation to the seat bothers me the most. ::)

If the tank is damaged a little from the seat I don't think that would bother me...ultimately I might get a whole new tank anyway and have a friend of mine repaint it with the side covers (he's far, far, far better than me with an HVLP gun). But would that mod leave any other signs of damage in other places? I'll know now to check the seat area very carefully when I go, thanks :) I'd assume putting in an F model seat would fix that problem for the future?

As for the exhaust, looks like one of these: http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Chrome-Megaphone-Muffler-CB-550-F

JimJ,

Welcome to the forum.

I think the bike looks in pretty good condition overall. If you're not worried about having a completely original bike with all the right parts, it will be a good beginner bike.
It's plenty fast, fun to drive, and they are good bikes to work on.

These bikes are pretty cheap to run, if you start with a complete bike that runs good already. Buying new parts can become expensive, so I suggest you decide if you can live with the dented tank and wheels for now.

I still have my 550F, it was my first bike and I will probably never sell it.

And don't forget to look in the FAQ and search the forum for buying tips.

My '77 550F has been very reliable.  I had some difficulty getting the Master Cylinder Rebuild Kit for it because they seem to stop at '76.  Also, I originally did exactly the same thing as the bike you are looking at as far as the seat.  Mine originally came with a King/Queen seat so I bought a used seat off ebay from a '76 550-4 thinking it was the same.  It fit great except for the front.  It rubbed paint off the edges of the tank but since It was only primered I didn't mind.  Once I had the bike painted, I had to buy a proper seat.  It never left any dents though.

i like my 78' 550k. I've had it for about 6 months, only minor problems. My oil pressure switch just went out but it was a 30 year old piece of rubber. plus TT, and this board help figure it out and bikes back on the rode. I'd say get the bike if it runs strong through the throttle. Meaning that the carbs are tunned well. what are your plans for the bike. keep it stock, cafe it(i would), or something else...?

I'd like to try to keep it as stock as possible. I'll be making a 3 hour trip every now and then from VA to NC, so keeping things comfy will be important.

Indeed, I saw an Ebay auction for an original seat for a 750 I think a few weeks ago, bidding went up like crazy...I'm sure tanks and wheels are the same way in good condition. Whatever bike I get, it's going in part of my folks' walk-in basement that I converted into a shop area, and with the fall semester starting up in about a month I'll have other things to worry about.

As far as I'm concerned, this is one big learning experience, I want to take my time and soak up as much knowledge as I can :) This seems like a perfect place for that...

I think the bike is in great shape for the price. I live in Richmond and a bike that would be a great deal. It seems that anything that runs will go for at least a grand around here. From the pics it looks like a sure winner to me.

The wheels would work until you find a stock set if needed. This place is a great resource for parts and tuning it correctly shouldn't be a big issue.

Go for it. I would if it I had the cash.

Where are you in big VA?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Checked it out in person today, too many things that are iffy I think :( It ran fine, but with 4.5k on the clock there were some things that didn't sit well with me. Faded instrument gauges, tach wouldn't rest at 0, and what really bothered me, rust on the frame. Looked just to be surface rust, but still...this must have sat outside for a long period of time in the last couple decades. Not to mention the seat issue, which raises the question of why the seat would have been replaced with that little mileage on it.

I would have thought for $1400 I'd find something that needed a little less work...maybe if it was $800 I could justify taking everything apart, sandblasting the frame and powdercoating it...but not at that price :(

Back to the search I guess...

This looked like a nice buy
I saw that one too...what a fantastic color (Candy Presto Red!). If I had even $1000, I would have picked it up already to keep me entertained while my other bike is in the garage - Weymouth isn't that far from me anyway, and that's the frustrating part.

To the OP: you sure the gauges weren't replaced at some point? It happens, like on my bike with a speedo from God knows what. All I know is that my bike definitely doesn't have only 4,000 miles on it. They can be replaced pretty easily, and you can change the faces like what I did. How bad is the rust on the frame: is the paint peeling, or can you brush it off with steel wool?

No idea one way or the other.

The paint was peeling back in places...I just got the sense it had been left out in the elements for some time. Which makes me less than enthusiastic about that price...
