HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE GLASS GAS FILTER
« on: July 23, 2008, 06:10:34 AM »
I had posted a while ago about my glass gas filter...no one seemed to know what I was talking about the center filter in the middle of the glass is replacable. Cant remember the mfg. Got it at pep boys...it is working good and gives you a good peak at what is going on with the gas....I needed it to make me feel better after dirty rusty tank and carb cleanings....

With barb fittings?

I use clear plastic ones with what looks like brass filter in the middle.

it is just the angle it is a white filter in the middle ..i think plastic and paper or foam. it has barb ends....i am happy with its performance but have been running a little lean I think from it not warming up fast....was thinking it could possibly be the way i had to route the gas line straight across and then run the gas tube back as the filter is to big to run straight down like one of the smaller inline filters. but I remeber someone saying it didnt matter.

GET THAT OFF YOUR BIKE ASAP !
Think about this one for a min. You have a glass piece holding fuel on your motorcycle.
What happenes to glass if say it were to smack into something ? (it will break).
So say your fuel filter breaks, where does the fuel go ? (all over your warm/hot bike)
What do you think will happen with fuel gets tossed onto a hot motor ? (9 outta 10 times it will catch on fire).

I personally know 4 people who have had fires on their cars (and motorcycles) becasue they used the exact same filter you have on your bike. Not trying to telling you how and what parts to use on your build, just thought I would share some advice. Alittle bit of common sense may save your bike from buring up in front of you...

ProTeal makes a bit of sense. I have the smallest plastic in line filters I could find (one of them is a little pancake looking thing thats actually meant for lawnmowers, but since this is all gravity fed, it works fine.) They are a bit of a tight fit, but so far no problems. I should admit that I have only had my bike up to 60mph, but it worked fine for me.

Thanks,
Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

The filters will work fine, untill they crack/leak/get hit by a random rock and explode/etc..
Like I said I have three buddies who watched their cars go up in flames becasue of this exact type of filter, as well as buddy who came out to see his HD Sporty in flames as well.

Not worth it in my opinion...

These have been around at least 30 years..

After a while they were sold by CR .. the seal guys.. aka Chicago Rawhide..

I used them and thousands of other did in the 70,s & 80,s, and this is the first time I heard of a fire with them.

My personal observation is the weak point is that they are die-cast..aka potmetal.. make billet ends and you are goodforlife..

Drag Specialties ( and maybe others), offered them with metal cylinders, and finned too..

As far as saftey.. 10 gallon glass visible pumps were only 1/4 in thick glass and they held 10 gallons..these are 1/8 inch thick and hold about an ounce... you decide..

I liked being able to see if gas is flowing but they do get air in them.. where they sit on a sohc motor it is pretty darn difficult to hit them there... just check the threads on them..

I checked it out last night still a little dirt in the filter....not to bad just wondering if it might be enough to clog the carbs...I might take a picture tonight and get the dr. sohc opinion aka all of you guys....if the carbs wont clog I will go back to the old filter which was a red cyclindical one but last time my carbs got clogged that was still clean i also saw a clear thinner plastic one at autozone maybe that would be a better choice. I think the tanks is cool after the coating.

I used to run one of those glass, cleanable gas filters on my VW - a lot of hot-rodders use them. However, I was definitely a bit sketched about the potential fire hazard of a broken one, so I wrapped a piece of high density foam (from an old military sleeping bag mat) around it with a couple of zip ties. Doesn't 'look as cool' but then again, neither would your engine on fire.  :o

On my bike, I use a pair of plastic bodied filters but still with ribbed plastic and neoprene around them. Betta safe than sorry with flammable stuff, me thinks.  :P
