'77 750K rear brake question
« on: September 05, 2005, 03:53:01 PM »
When I put on the rear brake I feel a pulsing through to my foot. Also, when I go over some dips in the road it feels like the rear brake might be grabbing a bit as the bike hits the lowest part of the road and starts back up out of the dip.

Brake seems to work OK, and no wierd noises coming from the back wheel. I bought the bike used, no idea how old the brake innards are. A neighbor thinks maybe pads are worn. Any thoughts?

When I put on the rear brake I feel a pulsing through to my foot.

This is a common problem on the 500/550 (didn't know it happened on the 750 as well).  The rear brake drum cracks leaving a high spot which "catches" the pads each revolution - hence the "pulsing" on the brake pedal.

My 500 suffers from this but scored very highly on the automated brake tester during its last MOT test. The only fix is a new hub (used rear wheels are rare because of this).

Alternatively, Bryan Jones (BryanJ) in the UK has a contact with a company that repairs them!

Ouch! That's not what I wanted to hear. Guess I'll be tearing it apart to see. I've got a parts bike; maybe I'll get lucky and have everything I need right here. Yeah right, and maybe Carmen Electra will want to go for a ride...

Take the brake plate and shoes out and run your finger around the inside of the drum. If it is cracked you will be able to feel it.
