YANKEE (Coffee shops) GO HOME!!!
« on: July 29, 2008, 08:10:23 PM »
When I worked in the city for a few months last year, I was surprised at the number of Starbucks and Gloria Jeans coffee shops opening around the CBD.

Even though Melbourne (with a large Italian population) is well known for it's excellent coffee shops, I thought I'd try it out, and I've gotta say, I wasn't impressed. To me, Starbucks and Gloria Jeans have done to coffee, what Pizza Hut have done to pizza.

So it was no surprise to me to see that Starbucks has announced that it is closing most of it's outlets in Australia, after posting losses in the millions, since opening their stores here in 2000.

To them I say "good riddance", and if they'd only take Gloria Jeans, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried, Pizza Hut, Burger King, (Hungry Jacks) and Subway with them, we'd all be happier, and no doubt, healthier. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Starbuck's is closing a bunch of stores here in Colorado.

I have never spent one dime in a Starbucks and proud of it. :)

I've got nothing against these pseudo coffee outlets cropping up everywhere, they're in it for the money, and it's ultimately our choice; as my learned friend said in an earlier posting "just say no".
But what does get my goat is the hundreds of self important power suited, brief-cased men and women strutting along the pavement clutching a styrofoam cup in one hand and it'll be at least 20 minutes before they can get to their offices to drink the damned stuff. By then it'll be cold!
So please enlighten me somebody; what's the point of spending 2+ quid ($4.00) for a cold coffee when most offices furnish you with hot coffee for free!

I live in a college town which means that either everyone is drunk out of their minds or so amped up on coffee, red bull, or energy drinks that they can barely see straight, but of the 20+ coffee shops in Iowa City, only one of them is a Starbucks.  The rest are local and are always packed, while the Starbucks stays pretty empty.  I think I've only stepped foot in a Starbucks once, and that was on accident. :)

I always love a good, strong cup of black coffee.  I fact I probably drink 5-6 cups of coffee a day here at work.  But I can't stand starbucks,  their coffee just tastes burnt whenever I get it.  I don't understand why anyone likes the stuff, but hey they wouldn't be as big unless at least a few people liked it.

In that same vein, Terry,  you only see all those american chains because people want it.  If they weren't making money they would just go away.  It's unfortunate, but they're probably there to stay.

The one and only time I had a Starbucks coffee was when my daughter bought me one, and it was so strong, I could hardly drink it  :P.  Too expensive, too strong, and the only times I was actually in a starbucks was to use their washroom.

Well.No starbucks here in SA, but when I'm in the states....love it ....apart from the price, good stuff. Here at home I enjoy sitting at my local coffe shop drinking from a proper cup and saucer with a little jug of fresh milk....having a couple of smokes and checking all the chicks go by....kills a couple of hrs in a morning sitting in the sun...!!

When they first started popping up in Milwaukee, I though to myself, "What kind of moron would spend that kind of money on coffee?"  No I stop in a few times a month.  :D

I like their "Americana" and for $1.20 it's not much more then the gas station coffee.  Strong coffee is a daily foundation for a lot of guys in retail sales.  Half way thought the day when I am exhausted, a cup of strong coffee keeps me going.

I have heard through the grape vine that Starbucks is an economy marker here in the states.  Because it is one of the first things people cut back on when money is tight is the extras (coffee shop, Disneyland, etc.).

in a town of 2000, we just got our first starbuck about a year ago. i've only been in twice. before that whenever i'd make a trip to a larger city about once every few months, i'd stop in and have a cup. yeah, $3 just for a cup is outrageous but it is quite good. it would be just a treat for myself. a $10 coffee maker and $5 for a large can of folgers will hold me off for at least a month.

I'm not saying Starbucks is the greatest, or that I'm not a little appalled by the uber-corporation it has become, but when I'm travelling (especially in the midwest), I am happy that there is a place to get coffee that is good and strong -the way God intended.  Being from Seattle, I can't abide weak coffee.  It's plain wrong.

the only way to get a consistent taste to espresso is to burn it.  The coffee would taste different from batch to batch if they roasted it correctly, but they want consistency.   I will drink their frappachinos from time to time, but it is more like a milkshake than coffee.

I can't stand Starbucks!!! Their coffee tastes like ass...now Tim Horton's on the other hand....that is a VERY different story!! I stop in for atleast 2-3 a day and in the case of tonight when I am on midnights it is usually more. There is one on every corner (or so it seems) in most Ontario towns.

For those of you lucky enough to live in the northern states like Michigan they are expanding big time down there...I am fairly certain that is our in roads to the US and how we will eventually take over down there!!!

Actually on a serious note with the amount of franchising going on with Timmy's...if any of you guys have the opportunity to get involved in the ground floor with a franchise it is basically a license to print money. As an example there are 2 locations within 100 feet of eachother by my work and BOTH are always so busy that I have never gone in to one with a lineup less than 4-5 people deep.

I go to Bux pretty well every day, for a hr or +..

A med coffee , that is actually pretty big is 2.00 not 3.00.. maybe you 3.00 dudes bought a foo-foo drink..

I think Hortons is for apprentices & amateurs.... besides the scenery at Bux is way better..

abour every 3 min or less you see girls walk by that look as good as the ones in the babe thread :o.. or better. usually they have more clothes on.. but not always.. it is near the beach.. afterall..

coffee is like bikes...

Ooh, looks like Oz is only a small part of Starbucks' problems, they're closing 600 stores in the US too! I'd say "Good riddance" again, if it weren't for the thousands of people who'll lose their jobs.................. :P

I recently read a very interesting book about sleep, and it neatly shows, that what humans need is not coffe, red bull, or whatever else, but just plain good 'ol sleep. And plenty of it... I really agree with it, only sometimes there's this and that to be done to the bike... y'know....  ;D ::)  :P

I like strong coffee. Do you know those "BUM" coffee makers? Do you know how much ground coffee is needed to make a full jar? In Spain, the same amount of ground coffee will be used to make two cups. Obviously, it will be much stronger, then it is mixed with milk -caffe-latte-, just a single hint of milk, or espresso.

I don't like Starbucks' coffee, and the price is outrageous. When I was in the States I went quite often because there was no other place to have a good coffee. Here in Spain you can have a good expresso anywhere for 1.20 euro. Starbucks here costs 3 euro, and you get a paper cup, a wood stirrer and nothing else. For 1.20 you get a china cup, a steel spoon.  It definitely tastes different. You don't drink a good wine in a paper cup, do you?

Starbucks in Spain has become the place for the trendy, non-price-conscious young people who like to spend some time there performing "cultural" activities such as surfing the web with their i-books or reading. Not surprisingly, the one that has the more customers is the one that sits in the gay neighbourhood of Madrid...
