New helmet critique
« on: August 02, 2008, 07:43:42 AM »
I started getting paranoid because NC passed a law that says you have to have a DOT helmet- I wear a Davida most of the time in the summer.
SO- I shop around and find a facsimile in the HCI Retro 50.  I got it from Jafrum because they seemed to have the best price.

So, the helmet comes.  Matt paint.  "Huh", says I, "matt finish.  Maybe i'll shoot some clear coat on it..."  Yes folks- I use googles in low light and there is a little strap in back that WILL NOT unsnap.  I e-kail Jafrum and they quickly reply that i need to be firm.  So- I'm so firm the snap breaks right off.  (Stil hasn't unsnapped, either)  So I e-mail Jafrum and they tell me they can't refund or exchange as a result of customer abuse.  So, I take large, well lit pictures showing in detail what happened and remind them they told me to "be firm".  They tell me I ned to send it back and they may or may not make an exchange and there will be no postage re-imbursement.

Helmet itself; OK fit.  Paint scratches easy.  I'm putting some foam in the top because it sits too low.  It's about $55 which is way less than a Davida.  I like my Davida better.

I'm very MAD AT JAFRUM.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

for the few times I've been stopped, the DOT check is something that the police never do.

I'd just wear the davida and put a DOT sticker on the back printed from my computer.

i would be too.  also, i've never heard of them... any more info?
don't let the bastards get you down, ernie!  they obviously know they sell sh!tty products and know the next one will just do it too.
if they don't fix it for you i'll recommend this...

this will only work if your goggle strap is typical winter goggle stretchy elastic type.  get a piece of the loop (stiffer) side of velcro and put it where the snap was.  the velcro will grab the strap and keep it where it needs to be.

otherwise, a bit weaker snap and some epoxy?

There's a hole in the back where they put the inside-part of the snap.  I put the female end of a sex bolt in there and got a 8x32 plastic screw through that.  The strap blew up when I tried to drill through the other half of the snap, so I'm using a washer and plastic nut tio hold the strap down.  Doesn't look too bad.

This reminds me of when I went to a restaurant and ordered "water with NO ICE please".  So, I end up with a huge tumbler of ice with a little water in it.  I wave the waiter down as he runs by and he says, "It'll melt..."
I guess he's a rich guy doing this as a public service?

Anyway- I found the helmets after a lot of research because they loked pretty good from a distance.  Found some reviews on Triumph Rat and it seems Jafrum is a little less expensive than other places.  I guess you get what you pay for.
