Exhaust suggestions
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:31:14 AM »
I need some suggestions.

I've got a '74 CB550 four with turn-out 4-2 mufflers.  They look ok (minus a couple holes), but I'd like to get something that is closer to stock.  I'd just go buy stock exhaust, but the price is holding me back.  What other options do I have?

I'm not looking for noise (I've already got one of those) or performance.  I'd like something as close to stock as possible at about half the price.  What options do I have?

Thanks for the mac suggestion.  I'm looking for other options right now.  I'm relatively new to this forum and these bikes so I'm learning as I go.

I think I could get some slip-ons to work... possibly.  I believe I have original headers, but I'm not quite sure.  I also don't know if I can get my current muffler and headers apart with mutilating them.

I don't know what brand 4 into 2 you have.  The ones I have, used the original headers that were cut off of the stock 4 into 4 mufflers.  The 4 into 2 setup had each muffler accept two head pipes.  The Y was made into the muffler.  It actually slipped on.  The Y being sized for the stock head pipes.

Don't know where to find such a thing, anymore.  I bought mine in 1975, cheap, about $75 as I recall.  JCWhitney used to sell them, too.

Let us know if you find "slip-ons" for the four head pipes.  Maybe a muffler shop can adapt something.

The stock pipes may be more expensive than your value system.  But, they look good, and are still far cheaper than a new bike.  And work much better than just about anything cobbled together to "get by".  Of course, if the bike isn't worth the parts cost to make it work properly, than what's the point?

I don't know what they are either.  They look like the turn downs the older Gold Wings used to have but modified on my bike to turn out.  I think there are original headers on the bike.  The y on on the muffler and slips onto the headers.  There are no clamps or anything else that I can tell that is rigidly holding the two together.  I've had the right side off and wiggled them a bit, but they didn't budge.

I may end up with the stock set up.  Maybe I'll buy a pipe a month so it doesn't hurt as much.

I think I had the same set up on my 76 550. The head pipes should slip right out if you want to save them or do a custom set up. I put a 4 into 1 on mine. Had the same problem with rust on the undersides of the 2 into 1s. I think its an original set up on the 550? Not sure.
