Engine braking causing backfiring
« on: August 04, 2008, 09:32:51 AM »
Hey everyone,

Is backfiring while engine braking a normal problem/concern for my '77 550k? The bike rides smoothly otherwise and generally never backfires once it's warmed up BUT whenever I engine brake (and particularly in first fear) I hear increasingly frequent popping noises.

Is this ok? Should I take care to just avoid engine braking?

I'm not really sure if engine braking is generally more efficient and/or a better way of braking in normal riding conditions. I'd like to get better at using engine braking, but its use is still a bit unclear.

Thanks

Dan

Popping in the exhaust pipes when decelerating with the throttle closed is often a sign of leaks in the exhaust somewhere.  Check your exhaust gaskets lately?

If it's mostly happening while cold, it's just a bit of unburnt fuel escaping into the pipes and firing there. Nothing to worry about in that case.
If it happens while warm, you many be dealing with either a lean (slow jet) condition, a hole in the pipe, or and extrmemly rich condition.
But, yous aid only when it's not warmed up, so I think yer fine.
No.

check your spark plug gaps. mine was popping on engine decel as well.  My plugs gap were to small, gapped them properly and no more popping
