engine teardown questions
« on: August 05, 2008, 02:45:07 PM »
How fitting that I finally have a day off to work on my bike and I have a question before I can really dig in to it! I'm about to start tearing down my engine so I can do the full gasket/cylinder/piston restoration and wanted to know if there are any things I should watch out for while disassembling. Also, it's supposed to rain in the next few days and the bike is sitting in my garage. Should be worried about engine components being exposed to humidity like that?

Thanks in advance!

yes,do not break a part of the main engine case off(says the man that sits here, jelling in dutch after he just broke an engine case to pieces on a honda 400 quad engine rebuild for a costumer while reassembling...)

just be organised, take notes, and undo case, head and cover bolts as per manual to prevent warping.
if you are worried about the humidity, lightly coat parts with oil

Take lots of pictures as you pull 'er apart.  Ziplock baggies and markers are invaluable!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

YEs +1, "bag em and tag em" has really helped me. I keep good quality bags handy with the slider locks so they are quick and easy to use. Also I keep index cards cut to size to drop into the bag with the description of contents. They are easier to write (use a Sharpie) on than the bag itself and that way your label will never fade or deteriorate. And you can use the bag over since it doesn't have writing on it
