Help replacing throtle cable CB 750 KO
« on: September 03, 2005, 10:11:51 AM »
I have a 69 CB 750 and recently had to buy a new throtle cable as the old one was in bad shape.  My question is how do I replace the old one.  More specifically in what order to I reconect the 4 throtle cables?  What position does the throtle need to be in?  All the way up or down.  I have replaced the old one but the throtle no longer will return to the all the way up or "off" position.  So I'm wondering if I need to conect the cabled on carb 2 and 4 and then do 1 and 2.  Or some order there in.  Any one with experience with the KO I would really apreciate it.

Are you saying you just changed the four individual/lower cables, or you have a complete new cable set from the carbs right up to the throttle grip?

As far as I know, whenever I have disconnected the cables from the slides on my K0 (as though you might be replacing them), there are differences in length for the inner and outer carbs, but it never made any difference what order I connected, or disconnected them in. If I'm not understanding your situation correctly, my apologies.

From memory longer cables to outer carbs, shorter to inner junction box above coils. Initial setting by opening to max and setting slides so they are level with the top of throat then you need to set using gauges

Thanks guys.  I can't figure out what I have done wrong.  When I hooked it back up I get no effect from the springs.  I have reconected them one at a time.  I actually think all the cables are the same size but if you take the juction apart each cable is allowed to have some play.  That I believe has something to do with the push/pull effect.  Do you have to twist the springs to get them to have some torcq or something?  Also I will have to make sure the two on the outside are longer and see if that helps.

I'm puzzled a bit by this statement. There is no push/pull on the K0 carbs, single cable to the throttle grip. No twisting, or preloading of the springs is necessary.

So when you connect the cables to the slides, cap the carb bodies, and you twist the throttle, what do you see and what happens?

The throttle grip turns and I see the cables are moving going into the top of the carb but the throttle grip stays in place when you remove your hand.  The grip does not return to its neutral top position.

Sounds like something is binding, either the grip itself or the cables. I guess if it were me, I would start tracing by disconnecting the single throttle cable from the grip assembly. Then check to see if the grip/sleeve is moving freely at the handle bar. If it is, then hold the cable sheath and tug on the free cable end and see if you can actuate the carb slides, you should be able to if the slides and cables themselves are not binding anywhere. Did you lube all the cable pieces?

nortonbk.

Probably not your issue, but when I replaced the grips on my K0, I had the right-hand (throttle) grip jammed in too far and what was happening is the inside of the grip at the end of the handlebar was actually rubbing against the bar end and the throttle was not returning. I worked the grip out on the plastic sleeve just a hair towards the bar end and everything was fine. On the K0's the slide springs are the only thing that provide the resistance to return the throttle, so any binding at all hampers their function.

Thanks Bob.  I did not lube the cables but they all seem to be sliding smoothly.  I will have to take it off and try again.  Perhaps it is binding some where.

When I had K0 carbs .... one trick I used was to pull each individual cable (of the four) up
above each carb and adjust them so that there was the same amount of play...almost none..
to make sure everything moved correctly.

To replace the cable you had to remove the carb slides.  Did you put them back in the same
carb they came out of?  There are two different types of slides, and they have to go in the correct
carb....trust me. ::)

Honda made a big improvement when they did away with the one into four cable and improved the
pull structure above the carbs.
