I use 98 octane Unleaded Fuel , to my car and to my bike it cost a Little bit more, but it`s moor power to the engine, the 95 cost less but burn more pr miles

I believe we have a different octane rating system.
My engines compression is around 10½;1

I try to avioid any gasoline blended with ethanol.

Nothing wrong with ethanol. Burns cleaner than gas does and in many areas, is cheaper than regular. Plus in the winter, you do not need top add any gas line anti-freeze all that stuff is made from alcohol anyways. It is slightly hotter burning though.

Until recently, I had not paid much attention to fuel mileage as it relates to gasoline vs. E85. Then I read a news story about the difference. Found this link, looks like the mileage for E85 is less. From a consumer cost perspective not sure there is much to be gained, but from an environmental perspective I guess there is.

Only if you have a ride with non-hardened valve seats.

I just drain out the avgas from my plane (which is undergoing an engine overhaul at the moment...);
100 octane leaded. WTF. It's meant to be used...whether at 4000 feet or 2 feet....it's all about the
fun (at 4.25 a gallon for avgas...).

I don't have a clue! I've got a 1978 CB750F SS project and when I am ready to run the old girl I want to fill her up with what ever fuel is most advantageous for her. wouldn't want to give her an ulcer or indigestion.

I use 100 octane low lead (which I believe is actually a phosphate additive, not lead) because it seems to keep things cleaner and I love the smell. Shell non oxy mid grade is also a good sustitute. One thing to consider; in the U.S.A., almost all gasoline is refined at the same few places, pipelined to your area where it is warehoused and additives added at time of shipping to your local retailer. These additives degrade over time, making fuel less desirable to your machine. So, buy gas at the busiest station in town. Fresh gas is better gas.

On the topic of Fuel, I would highly reccomend Lucas brand injector/carb/fuel system cleaner..
It comes in a tall clear bottle, and is almost like a clear syrup type stuff. I put a bottle in my CB750 and could honestly feel a major difference in power, bike sounds and runs better, smoother, etc..
For $3 , you cant go wrong. A few of my car friends have tried it, all with the same results..

Nice to find something that ACTUALLY works like advertised...

Regular 87 octane is all you need in these bikes. The higher octane does nothing but inflate their profits and shrink your wallet.

I used to run 91 octane and saw NO DIFFERENCE WHAT SO EVER when I changed to 87. And as for octane boost, the only time to use that stuff is when your gas has been sitting around for a while. The booster actually makes stored gas half way usable again! The additives in the high octane fuel hurts more than it helps. I remember someone saying something about the additives eating away at the sensitive parts in your carbs...

My favorite additives are the one's that state "99.1% effective against getting a woman pregnant"!

In cars, I seam to remember the general rule of thumb was. You would use no higher octane than it would take for your engine not to run on and ping when you turned of the ignition and not to ping (premature ignition) while the engine is running. "I could be wrong"

Like anything else, you will actually make less power if you "over-octane" a motor.
Basically the engine cant burn the fuel fast enough, and their is a power loss that happens...

Kinda.....but it would take alot more than 87 vs 93 to do it.

If your running 93 without high compression, a blower, turbo, or nitrous your prolly not getting any benefit to paying more.

Personally I like the 100 LL aviation stuff because it is an aromatic fuel with none of the additives in car gas. In a sealed container the stuff lasts forever

This is a really interesting topic. I too used to be one of those people convinced that premium HAD to be way better than regular.

With my '00 VFR800 I used premium because for my kind of riding (95%+ highway) I got gas mileage higher than the % difference in the price between premium and regular.

I have been putting premium in the 650, but this whole thread has made me think again. I guess I should just rtfm because Honda should know best.

It's not any better for them than regular since that's what they were made to run on, but with the kind of mileage a bike in good tune gets, I guess the price difference is negligable. Like I say, if it makes you feel better, then go ahead and do it.
