Do you guys keep float level gauges as part of your tool kits? A friend says you can just do it by eye. Where is a good source?

it can also be done by using a piece of tubing attached to the drain and held up against the carb body... fuel in carb and let drain.  will flow inside clear tubing to the exact level that it is at inside the bowl.

problem w/ this method is the requirement to disassemble, assemble, fill, set up tube, drain, measure, repeat entire process as needed!
all w/ only 2 hands!  and 4 carbs!

1. Look at the gauge Honda sells. 2. Look at your disassembled carb. 3. Use your imagination. You don't need an adjustable one. I made one from stiff posterboard. It took 3 tries to get it right but in 15min. I was setting my floats. Worked perfect. Good luck.

Buy one of those cheap rulers in the thread.  They're cheap, and you'll use it for many occasions.  I have two or three around the house.

Not suggesting anyone buy one but to answer the question the part number is 07401-0010000 and I paid $38.02 in Canada so for sure it would be less in the US, everything else is. This was about a month ago.

I bought it along with a new exhaust for my K3 and we all know what they cost so the gauge didn't seem like much at the time.

Cut one out of an old plastic bucket lid, those laundry detergent lids are great, flexible and easy to cut out. I have made a few little tools and things out of plastic lids. Kghost is right, it only takes 10 minutes to make one then keep it in your tool box and use it over and over again.

I cut mine out of piece of kydex because i had some in my shop but anything will do.  Precision down to .3 mm is enough.

on the pd type carbs you just lift the drain hoses vertical(if they are clear)and crack the screw,itll fill up to the level they are set to and show any imbalance,,the type ones you have to remove the drain screw dumping the bowls fuel and fit tubes and do the same thing.

+1 0n the K&L Gauge..it's very adjustable and was good quality when I got mine in 92'...$32; I modified mine so it will slide over the outer flange raised portion of the carb. body and make direct contact with the gasket surface(after having removed the gasket to get the most accurate measurement)..;I took a hacksaw and cut a slot on each side.

Immortal Here is a photo of the clear tube method and a cheap and easy test stand. Every thing can be set up and tested on the bench. Keep in mind this is for the 78 pd carbs.On earlier models the drain/overflow is a little different. If you look close you can see the fuel level on the #4 carb. It should be 2 to 3 mm below the gasket.

it's basically a spirit level.

attach clear fuel line to the drain plug & bend it up parallel to the side of the bowl.
the height of the fuel in the line = the height of the fuel in the bowl.
this method eliminates confounds like unevenly bent float armatures, differences in float buoyancy,  blobs of JB weld in the bowl, solar flares, etc.

I used the pocket slide rule.  Not easy to find in a store to walk up to anymore.  People in the school supply store will look at you funny wondering what on earth you are talking about.  Too young to have ever seen revenge of the nerds I guess.  Using this, be sure to measure the height of both floats.  Don't think just because you do one that the it the same.
