Do I need a float level gauge/where to get one..
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:42:18 AM »
Do you guys keep float level gauges as part of your tool kits? A friend says you can just do it by eye. Where is a good source?

Thanks

it can also be done by using a piece of tubing attached to the drain and held up against the carb body... fuel in carb and let drain.  will flow inside clear tubing to the exact level that it is at inside the bowl.

problem w/ this method is the requirement to disassemble, assemble, fill, set up tube, drain, measure, repeat entire process as needed!
all w/ only 2 hands!  and 4 carbs!

This is what this guy is using in place of the honda "special tool":

And how he measures 26mm. Is that what you are looking for?

If you're willing to shell out the bucks you can still buy the Honda tool from any dealer.

750fromhell has the right tool!  Any tool store has 'em.

Or, you can spend about 30-40 bucks for the 'real thing'.  I happen to have one... ::)

I like the look of the oem tool, anyone have a part#? The last woman I spoke with at my local Honda dealer did not know whether a CB750 was a motorcycle or "something else"

Talked to the previously mentioned dealer, and they said they checked with their service department, and it would cost "over $100" Not happening.

Both your friend and your dealer are idiots.

Seriously tho....you can make one out of a scrap piece of tin or aluminium.

1. Look at the gauge Honda sells. 2. Look at your disassembled carb. 3. Use your imagination. You don't need an adjustable one. I made one from stiff posterboard. It took 3 tries to get it right but in 15min. I was setting my floats. Worked perfect. Good luck.

Buy one of those cheap rulers in the thread.  They're cheap, and you'll use it for many occasions.  I have two or three around the house.

Not suggesting anyone buy one but to answer the question the part number is 07401-0010000 and I paid $38.02 in Canada so for sure it would be less in the US, everything else is. This was about a month ago.

I bought it along with a new exhaust for my K3 and we all know what they cost so the gauge didn't seem like much at the time.

a paperclip bent snug around the ruler might suffice?

Cut one out of an old plastic bucket lid, those laundry detergent lids are great, flexible and easy to cut out. I have made a few little tools and things out of plastic lids. Kghost is right, it only takes 10 minutes to make one then keep it in your tool box and use it over and over again.

I cut mine out of piece of kydex because i had some in my shop but anything will do.  Precision down to .3 mm is enough.

K&L Supply Company list an adjustable fuel level gauge
Any shop that deals with K&L can get you one
Given the choice, I've always used a wide steel rule

I like the clear-hose-out-the-drain method.
It's the only way to really know whether the bowls are filling evenly.

How do you do the "clear-hose-out-the-drain method" ?

on the pd type carbs you just lift the drain hoses vertical(if they are clear)and crack the screw, itll fill up to the level they are set to and show any imbalance,,the type ones you have to remove the drain screw dumping the bowls fuel and fit tubes and do the same thing.
