78 CB750F Camshaft assistance
« on: August 07, 2008, 12:37:05 PM »
What up! I'm pondering picking up 1978 750F from a guy who says the camshaft is broken/messed up.

I was hoping you guys could shed a little light on a possible replacement. I've already looked around at shops in the neighborhood and through parts fisches and as I'm sure you are all aware it's a non-available item.

Honestly, this is my 1st project and I'm just a noobie. I think I have a good deal here but this part is proving hard to find.

Please help a brother out.

CB750F top end parts (cam. valves, head, pistons etc) are different from all other CB750's (except for '77 CB750F models).

They have a reputation of being hard on valve guides and other parts.  Cheapest and easiest fix is to replace the head, cylinders and pistons with items from any earlier model K motor.

You'll be hard pressed to find valves and cams and pistons for the 750F motor for reasonable prices if they indeed need to be replaced.

Replacing top end parts on a CB750 requires removing the engine from the frame, so on the list of first projects, it's relatively complicated.  If you are fairly mechanically inclined, you can do it with basic tools and an aftermarket manual.

crap, that just translated to "the guy is selling it on CL cause he can't find the part himself."

Bad camshaft translates to "what else got f'd up in the process"  Cam towers? Valve springs / keepers / retainers?  Head casting?  Piston to valve collision if the cam sheared?  How much debris is still sitting in the engine?, etc etc.  Bottom line, is that it isn't likely that you will be able to just plop in a new camshaft and go.  BTW you can certainly buy a performance camshaft for the engine from Megacycle or Webcam.

make sure he isn't ASSUMING that it's a cam problem. has he looked at the cam? that means he had to remove the engine to open the valve cover to SEE the camshaft. otherwise it could be something far less problematic.

shoot the guy an offer he can't refuse. all else fails, swap the engine.

The shady way it was worded on CL lead me to think there was more troubles even for the $500 the dude wanted for it. And that's the answer to my question that I was definitley looking for, where do i get that specific part. For some reason NYC has a load of 750F's for sale so if a part like that goes then I'll have a resource...thanks eurban
