Show us your BOX!... Tool-box that is
« on: August 08, 2008, 01:46:53 PM »
I've been going crazy lately in the garage tripping over all the tools strewn about.  So, I revamped the setup in the garage (you'll see my progress in the shop thread) and put all the tools in their proper place.

Let this thread serve as a "my tool is bigger than yours!" or "my box is bigger than yours!", but most of all, it can really help on the insurance side of things.   ;)

I'll start out w/ a short story... got the top box when I headed out to MMI, they of course told me it was not the required box and I told them I could still carry it so bugger off.   ;D  When I transferred from assistant managing the setup dept. at Metro and went on to wrenching in the service dept., the setup guys sent me away w/ the matching bottom box.   :)  7 days from today marks a decade since the day that I entered MMI for the first time, I have yet to need a bigger box and I attribute that all to great organizational skills.    8)

Now, SHOW US YOUR BOX!

and, my self-propelled toolbox.   ;D

I wish I had something so nice...

I have a little 3-drawer boxtop craftsman toolbox that barely holds all my stuff.

But it IS portable!

Ya had me at Craftsman heff, but ya disgust me being organized like that...  8)

Mine's hiding back in the corner:

I'll post a better pic of it after I put all the tools back (I've been meaning to clean the garage, now I feel really guilty...).

I wish I had a garage.  My tools are strewn all over the living room at the moment and my special ladyfriend is none too pleased about that.  I would show you pics but, alas, no digital camera.

I am ashamed to know you heffay!!!!!!!! How can you call yourself a mechanic with a toolbox that NEAT AND TIDY!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My box at work is always a mess, and never seems big enough, it seems at least once a wek i have to come up with some custom gizmo to do something on a job, i`ll keep it but may never use it again :)
My tool box at home is a lot smaller and the tools have spread to boards on the wall and shelves, gets a bit awkward at times but I know where everything is lol

Edited to add pics...
Ok so in the true spirit of "I`ll show you mine if you show me yours" heres a few pics of my home toy er tool box.....

OK so its a mess, i know where everything is

And a couple of pics of my favourite toys, mig, tig, e-wheel,flanger and my bead roller

Snap-on tool box with a 2 drawer unit underneath, the tools are mostly Britool with a selection of Snap-on and more recently Craftsman, I will have to take some more pics of drawers open, like heffay said useful for insurance purposes.

Obviously Jonesy doesn't do any work in his garage.  If my work bench looked like that, I'd have to mess it up. ;D ;D ;D

I got this box back around 2000. It has been with me through a couple stints as a professional wrench.  Somehow I am a lot more organized as a pro than I am in my garage.

The box sits on one side of a cart, and the table next to it is on the other side. The last shop I worked at only had three workbenches, and they were always cluttered. Under the lid I have several small boxes to divide it up into compartments.  On the back are some racks for my creeper, sledgehammer, and long prybar.

Unfortunately the "shop" is in mom's garage and becomes very cluttered with stuff.

No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

OK... Here we go!

The grand tour of the "Tower of Power". I arrange my stuff by category (for the most part, or wherever it will fit!). And yes.. I do know what every tool is for- ask me!

Up top, sockets and other what-not:

Top 3 drawers- Left: measurement and small tools. Middle: really small tools, feeler gauges, sparkplug tools. Right: scrapers, punches, chisels, picks:

Ratchets, breakers and extensions:

Combination wrenches and small torque wrenches:

Other specialty wrenches, brushes:

Nutdrivers, Torx drivers, awls, specialty handtools:

Screwdrivers and allen wrenches:

Moving on to the middle box, we start with the pliers:

Taps, dies, snapring pliers, filter wrench, crescent wrenches:

Sheetmetal working tools, files:

Engine reconditioning tools:

Moving on to the bottom box, we start with electrical diagnostics, soldering, flashlights and tune-up instruments:

Wire brushes, hammers, prybars and struck tools:

Air tools and accessories:

Oddball / seldom used / odd shape tools that really won't fit anywhere else:

And finally at the bottom the larger torque wrenches, Heli-Coils, fender covers and other misc. items:

Ahhh.. what all those years of professional wrenching did to me!

and yes upperlake, like jonesy, i've used every one of them and i could tell you not only how to use them but probably other ways too.   ;D 8)

btw, anyone ever had one of their tall boxes fall over from too many drawers open at one time?   :D   just stay out of the way!

Thanks, Heff! Yeah, I think you put it into words better than I did.

Actually, I owe you a word of thanks as this thread inspired me to get off my butt and clean up the shop and put half of that stuff back in the box where it belongs, as I gradually get like kghost, and have the entire shop be my toolbox!

I alway wanted a Craftsman three tier like jonesy's "Tower of Power" but i'm to short to see whats in the top :(

I have to admit, I used to chuckle when I'd see the toolbox stepstool offered in the Snap-On catalog..  ;D :D I'm envious.. I always wanted a Snap-On box, but the price always sent me into sticker shock!  :P :o

Obviously Jonesy doesn't do any work in his garage.  If my work bench looked like that, I'd have to mess it up. ;D ;D ;D

That was a "staged photo".. all of the crap was behind me! It's almost never that clean (just ask my wife!).

I am impressed w everyone's tool boxes here.
Have to admit mine are no where near. I have 2 plastic carry boxes (both Christmas presents), 2 5 gallon buckets w nylon sleeves for the long tools and a workbench scattered w tools. Very messy, but it's all I can afford.

If the wife would stop buying stuff for the house I could probably buy some decent tools, but that'll never happen. ???

peace,
michel

similar to all my portable tools/boxes (which far outnumber garage tools)... the cheapy orange home depot carry tool boxes are my choice, that and buckets w/ tool pouches.
