Grip length...does it matter??
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:32:39 AM »
Well, after owning my first bike for a month, I got my first taste of wet riding.  Had to go 22 kms to get to work along a fairly windy hwy.  needless to say i dumped the bike going around a corner.  I was gonna replace the bars and grips over the winter but now i HAVE to do it.  I've been lookin around and found a cheap set but there is 2 lengths. 5 3/4" and 5 3/8"   does the length matter? I'm a newb when it comes to bikes but as long as it fits the 7/8" bar the length shound't really matter. I also snapped a front turn signal mount and lost a mirror.

I found out when getting new grips for my 82 is that the stock grips that the shops sell do not work, they are too short but i was able to order the same ones so be kinda careful and measure the new ones before you buy.

Measure the distance between the throttle housing and the end of the plastic throttle sleeve on your bike. Order grip length accordingly. Too short and you have exposed plastic sleeve, too long and you have floppy rubber on the end. Just installed 125mm grips which fit my bike well, but my throttle housing isn't stock so don't go by this.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

The right length is best, but most grips have some stretch and will cover small discrepencies.  You can also use "grip puppies" (small donuts of foam rubber sold to dirt bikers) to make up small differences.
