rear tire leaning
« on: August 10, 2008, 02:31:03 PM »
I pulled the rear fender off my 77 750 and noticed that the tire leans to the right. There is almost a 1/2" diffrence in the shock mount measurement from one side to the other with the shocks removed. I don't see any damage and the swingarm and wheel are not sloppy. Any ideas?

guess I'll pull it and have a look see. damn thing is so stout I can't imagine it's bent. However the bike does have an 18" rear wheel and everything I've read says it should be 17. Thanks for the input.

You could have issues as I don't completely understand your explanation, but . . . If you look closely (and measure carefully) you will find that your upper shock mounts stick out more from the frame rail on the left side than on the right side of the bike.  You also should find that the swing arm forks and the attached lower shock mounts are shifted to the left the same amount, lining up with the top shock mounts.    You should also notice that the rear wheel is shifted to the right in the swingarm the same amount that the swingarm is shifted to the left.  Guess what?  This puts the rear wheel "exactly" back on the centerline of the bike as referenced  off of the frame rails.  Honda built it this way (at least the late bikes) but I can't say for sure why.  Probably allowed for proper chain clearance.  Read this thread if you like, where I started off worrying that my rear wheel wasn't installed correctly.  After I spent a good amount of time looking at everything I decided it was as intended.  Hopefully your situation is similar . . .  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=7764.15

You really should post this in the SOHC4 bikes section as it gets more readership.  The project shop is supposed to be for posts showing off and discussing bike builds.

pulled the swingarm and it is tweaked hard. no signs of road rash or damage but the bike was in some kind of incident. in need of a swingarm...
