Do you mean the bolt just turns and will not unscrew? If so, get a wooden broom handle and insert it into the fork tube, press down and remove the screw.

+1 on the broom handle, you will probably have to file a taper on the end of the broom

If the problem you're having is the bolt spinning but not coming out, I had the same issue on my 400F.  I found a suggestion to turn the fork upside down and remove the bolt.  I had the spring and top cap in the fork when I did this and it came out quite easily.  I wasn't expecting it to work.

If its spinning use the broom handle, if you have rounded out the hexagon drill out with an 8mm drill till the head falls off then remove the  remaining threaded part with vice grips after stripping out he damper-----NOTE:- If you need to do this you will need a new copper washer(special size) as well as the bolt

Where can the copper washers be found?  I'd like to replace the ones on mine.  They're stuck to the bottom of the bolt heads.

The allen head stripped. Can i just drill it out? If so, do I use a small drill bit. Not sure of the process.

You could try tapping an oversize hex or Phillips into the hole to turn the bolt.  It'll probably ruin the hex/Phillips bit though so use an old one.

Drill off the bolt head, it is a shallow allen head bolt, so it won't take the much. This way there will be some threads exposed after the head is off, and you can apply some heat to the part of the bolt stuck in the "pipe", if need be.

DO NOT DRILL ALL THE WAY IN OR YOU COULD BE REPLACING YOUR FORK LOWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  >:(

You want to use a drill bit larger than 8mm or you will just be drilling into the bolt. Personally I would use a drill bit that is almost as large as the head itself. But that might just be me...  ;D

Take your time and go slowly, constantly looking for the point where the bolt head can be broken off!

But Phil,

Say I get the head off. then what? I would have a bolt still stuck in there (minus head).

Once you drill off the head of the bolt you can take the pipe out of the lower and then deal with getting the remaining part of the bolt out of the pipe. FWIW, I am assuming that these fork internals are very much like the ones on my 1971 CB750K1.

I am missing something. How will the pipe come out just by taking the head of the bolt off?
Dosent the entire bolt with threads need to come out to release the pipe?

Actually, the threads to the bolt are in that pipe you are trying to remove.  Once the head is off you may have to take a small punch and tap the left over stud through the fork bottom.  Once the pipe is out you should be able to get a vise grips on it to remove it.

This is why I said that I am expecting it to be similar to my 71 K1 model, where the actual damper rods is bolted indivually to the fork lower. Even if it isn't it should free up the damper rod/ fork tube assembly to come out as one piece.

Would punching it through strip the thread on the casing preventing me from installing another bolt?

If you drill off the bolt head completely it will fall right out and still leave enough of a piece sticking out to get a pair of vice grips on it.

Is it like the picture that Johnie posted?

Okay so I just looked at the Fiche for your bike and though it isn't exactly like my K1 it does seem close enough that this is still the way to go. There seems to be a long rod attached to the top of the damper rod. Do you know how (or if? It is attached at the top? Is that just a guide for the spring? I never had a set of those forks apart before.

Jerry,

notice how short the Allen head bolt is? Take note when drilling it out. Also you will most likely need to go to a Honda Dealer to get the same bolt to go back in. Take care when prying out the old seal, as you don't want to mark up the seals OD mounting area.

Good luck, Phil
