CB400F and CB350 sprockets - same size and interchangeable?
« on: August 10, 2008, 06:44:55 pm »
Help agacame in!
I was driving my 1975 CB400F today and the sprocket side plate came loose and became horridly bent before I could even slow down to the side of the road.  Luckily everything else is fine, but the sprocket side plate was damaged beyond repair and I had to remove it.  Three questions:
1.  It is safe to ride for a few days without the side plate? All it seems to do is protect the sprocket from dirt and grime.

2. Does anyone know where to get a new one?  Bike bandit said they couldn't find it, my local shop can't either, and ebay's got nothing, except this:

(don't buy it out from under me) ;D
Leading to my third question:

3. Did the 1975 CB400F and the 1973 CB350 have the same size sprocket?  In other words, does anyone know if this will fit?  I'm willing to risk fifty bucks if it seems a good chance, and you guys have always been right before......btw my 400 is stock, no size changes on the sprocket.

Thanks in advance,
Fish

I'm not sure that the # of teeth are the same, but the rear hubs have the same Part number. for 350 and 400 fours.

The flanged OEM sprockets are discontinued and not available NOS anywhere I know of (I got the last one from Honda Canada about 5 years ago). No aftermarket sprocket I've seen has that sheet metal flange ring.
So unless you are trying for concours, forget the ring: it may have some mysterious vital purpose but I've used open sprockets with no problems at all. There are many suppliers that make excellent sprockets that fit, in assorted tooth counts if you want to adjust the final drive ratio.
Be very careful about buying used sprockets, a worn one will ruin a new chain quickly. Get a new set of high quality sprockets and a high strength chain and you will likely never have to replace them again.

Try www.sprocketspecialists.com.

I had one of their aluminum rear sprockets made with 40 teeth (2 more than stock) which helps the 400 get up and going faster.  No problems running without the shroud.

The CB350F has 38 teeth on the rear. Depending on what kind of CB400 you have it will vary. Go to cycle recycle (online store).

They have some cheap good quality ones, they also have a chart that tells you exactly what sprockets you need (chain 2). Shipping is fast and cheap 2.

Edit: tsflstb what's up with those rear shocks? They look pretty cool, didn't realize you had a sweet CB400!

Shocks are from a CB900F.  A little stiffer and about 1 1/2" longer than stock.  Thanks.

Thanks everybody - You've put my mind at ease, and I'm going to just ride without the shroud, as it doesn't seem to be necessary.
