K1 going back together!!

Well after some needling by Andy750 I decided to get off my duff and start putting the K1 back together this past weekend! It wasn't so much laziness as two other bikes that intervened. My 1988 K100RS SE ABS bike and my 1969 R60/2.

Oh well the K100 is now my ultra reliable daily runner and the /2 is making me crazy because of the mess the PO made with the tank, but I digress...

I actually got the tapered roller bearings installed today along with the entire front end! It's nice to have a little color back on the bike and I am sure that it will help speed up the reconstruction process! Note this is not a restoration, as I really only took it apart to clean and replace anything worn. All of the bodywork and frame is still the original paint as are most of the parts! Really looking forward to riding this!

Interesting side note is that I put the front axle in the wheel and attempted to tighten it down to the specified torque (~ 40 Ft/lbs) it seemed like the entire bearing assembly was locking up. So I was wondering if I actually needed new wheel bearings. So as I was sitting and looking at this problem, I noticed that the spacer on the nut side of the axle, had some wear marks on it, like it was turned around!

I removed the wheel and pulled the axle and pulled out the spacer. It looked the same on either end, but I turned it around an voila! No more funny wear marks showing. Then I torqued the assembly and VOILA AGAIN, the wheel spun easily! So I guess that silly spacer does only go in one way! Maybe the next time I have it out I will take a real close look at it and take some measurements with my dial calipers.

Now to really get cracking on putting it back together! I WAS planning on bringing it to Larz on the 17th of this month, but I am not going to worry about that. Instead I will take my 1976 CB550F and take my time putting the K1 back together!

alright phil!!  i think you made a great choice with the k1 as i believe it's the prettiest of the whole line...no offense intended to everyone out there.   and it's not as pricy as the k0's either.  smart build.  good luck and i hope to see you at larz on the 17th!

Man Phil...I really like that gold!!!  Has my heart racing...can't wait to see that finished project.

 Thanks! The original paint is actually in amazing condition!! I also have another complete set of bodywork that I am intending to get painted YOUR color!!

The BMW shown in the photo above is a really nice machine and the pic dosent do it justice. Despite being a 1988 model it managed to keep up with my 1974 CB750K4 on the interstate going from Boston to Ohio and back   ;)

Well with all of this crappy weather we have been having, staying inside and working on the K1 doesn't seem like such a bad idea. It won't be long now! I can't wait to wheel this thing outside and fire her up! And take some proper pictures!!

Well I got the K1 all back together yesterday, got it running and even took it out for a 6 mile shakedown run! It runs GREAT! Especially considering that yesterday is the FIRST time I have EVER hear it run!  ;D

It idles well, goes through the gears, and all the way to the redline with absolutely no drama! I am wondering what state of tune this motor is. As I have no history for the bike, I don't know if the motor is stock or slightly built.

I know a guy locally who has built many many 750 race motors and I am going to have him ride it and see if he can tell me is it is stock or built.

Out on the road I can easily see why this motorcycle singlehandedly put the entire British bike industry out of business! It does everything great and even sounds the business! Now after getting a chance to actually hear some HM300 pipes, I gotta wonder why anyone would remove these pipes and put on some #$%*ty Kerker!

Excellent Phil...congrats on a nice build there.  Just beautiful.  My paint guy is so busy at the moment I do not think my gold will be ready for the WI show in August.  I may take it anyway and put "in progress" on it.

I put about another 40 miles or so on it today and I must say that this bike is really growing on me! It runs GREAT and it sounds even better!!! I hope my new HM300's sound this good!

Plus it really rips! I can't wait to do a side by side comparison with my 1972 R75/5! Should be good for a yuk!
