Topic: TROUBLES AFTER SITTING FOR 2 YEARS

Hi fellas I'm back!

been a while but basically with my divorce out of the way I'm wanting to reward myself with some road time.

Sad thing is my baby isn't acting like she used to.

here's the symptom.  thank god theres only one.

after two years hiding in storage, with a full tank of gas + fuel stabilizer.
she started right up with little trouble.

I only added one new item...

A gel cell battery.

she warms up fine, revs up real nice, start off seems OK, but once i get her up to around 4k & 5K rpm
shes sputtering and backfiring. I back off and shes fine.

so smooth on the takeoff but at higher rpm shes crappy.

I'm thinking either timing or the fuel has to used up and flushed out of the system.

what say you all??

I'd definitely start with some fresh gas, & a regular tune-up.....plugs, oil, cam chain, & tappets - check your points - perhaps the've glazed over

I think you have crap built up in the carbs from so long. If you want to try and avoid a carbs teardown, you could put a lot of seafoam or techtron in the tank and ride around and see if it clears it out.

i would start with checking the timing advance mechanism,see if it moves freely..
nice idle ,nice rev till 5 grand,then trouble sounds to me like timing....the advance or maybe the points glazed.....

+1. That's the first thing I though of, too. Followed closly by crap in the main jet not allowing full fuel flow at higher RMPs.

I will give her a fresh tank of gas "with seafoam"

I checked the advance mechanism and i can visibly see that its doing its job freely.


oh and by the way my baby is a 1981 CB650C

In other forums I also saw that the timing chain may need some adjustment.
from what i saw the procedure is simple. loosen the lock nut and rotate the engine clockwise, then tighten the locknut again.

question is,  clockwise??  is that rotating the engine normal or reverse?

beyond all that...

Clock wise is normal rotation, forward as if the crank were the front wheel rolling forward.

yep,i just did the timingchains of my 1980 cb650 baby's(i got 2 of em)
very simple,loosen off the bolt  below the carbs on the cylinder abit,turn engine like normal rotation(i took off the cover right side crank)and WHILE turning slowly tighten up the bolt again,done......

update:

I would like to say that it seems my troubles are gone.

with just 1/2 a can of seafoam.  a fresh tank of gas.

i just let her idle in the driveway for a while, and that did the trick.

I havent done the timing chain thing yet but I do plan to.

I was out on the road most of this past weekend and she ran real smooth with good power on takeoff and passing power.

there is a little tappity sound while adding power 5th gear going on an uphill grade.

no real power loss after 4 hrs of riding. best weekend ive had in a long time.

Glad to hear your problems were so easily fixed, enjoy the riding weather while ya got it cos in a coupla months time it migrates down to me!
