Bought me a Black Bomber!
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:50:47 AM »
So, another bike enters the stable. I have a hard time saying no to these old Jap bikes. Long story short, a coworker that I never see (works opposite shift) outta the blue asks me if I am into bikes and tells me he has one for sale. Well I’m thinking no I don’t want a dirt bike but I ask what he has. He then tells me he has a 66 Honda, running, but in rough shape. With out hesitation I tell him consider it sold with out even seeing it. So In September when I have time to make the two hundred mile trip to pick it up this little gem it will be number six in my stable of bikes I feel compelled to rescue and bring back to life.

The two main issues I need to take care of right off the bat is a leaking shifter seal and it will not hold a charge.

So with the collective wisdom here any suggestions for the charging issue and some resources on good places to get parts would be greatly appreciated.

Why do you worry about that? You don't have the bike yet.

I NEVER talk about a bike, business or job until it is mine. For some reasons, when I talk about them before they are mine, one way or another the deal is never finished.

Get the bike and once you assess the real condition, tackle each issue one by one.

Lucky!! (in the voice of Napoleon Dynamite). Where's the bike located? If you're in Anchorage and it's 200 miles from you, who knows maybe it's closer to me then it is to you.  ;D ;D ;D

::) I didn’t say I was worried. I am aware I will have many more issues to deal with as I have five more bikes in dire need of attention.

What I do need is help with reputable places/people to get soft goods from.

As far as not talking about a bike before my ass is on it and down the road, I don’t know what to tell ya. Where I'm at a hand shake and a verbal done deal pretty much makes it mine.

I'm sure it is John, I'm sure it is... I had one once upon a time ago (about 13 years ago) but a former house mate of mine stole it and sold it off for parts. Unfortunately, I had no hard proof to prosecute.

That's good. That's the way things should be, and at least that's the way I do things. But too many people won't mind breaking a deal when somebody comes around and make a bigger offer. Their reasoning sounds like "hey, if this guy is offering me that much, then the other guy was screwing me by offering me so little. I don't have to stick to my word".

Congratulations on the bike, the Black Bomber is one of the bikes I would love to have. Instead I have the "spanish version", the Sanglas 400E...

The leak is probably just a seal, and probably still available.  Check your local Honda dealer.

Yea, that's right.  I just told a guy in Anchorage Alaska to check his local dealer.  A buddy of mine used to be a service writer at Honda of Anchorage.

Yep, I just checked and they have a mess off parts, seal for $4! I should be able to pop that little bugger out and put the new one in... ??? I'm assuming. The Anchorage Honda shop is pretty good, the Yamaha shop on the other hand, I won’t go on a rant.

@Raul CB750K1, I just found out from another coworker this morning some turd offered the owner two times what I'm paying for it and he turned them down, "Nope, I already shook on it" 8) The jerk that did that hemmed & hawed on a good deal and missed the boat.

John,

I envy you. The Black Bomber was my favorite restoration project of all.

1) There are hundreds of parts available for it still through Honda.

2) There are 3 suppliers in the US who will likely have it if your local dealer can't help you.

3) There are some parts you ain't going to find anywhere. Seat hinges are one such item, stock rear sprockets are one, stock exhaust is another.

As Raul said, go get your hands on it as quick as you can. They are valuable and I firmly believe that if done with NOS parts and done nicely, you are making a sound investment. I feel sorry for the guy doing one 2-3 years from now. I literally worked with over 20 sources for almost 1 year and no budget for parts and still had to spend over $5,000 in getting a tool maker to custom fabricate 25 sets of seat hinges and 15 pairs of fork trims.

Once you're done, there is satisfaction that few more in the world can be done - parts are drying up that quick.

When you have it and are ready, you can post or PM and I'll help you with information. I will not make a public post.

Gordon

Did some of thees come with chrome finders? I know what everyone means when having a problem when you can not turn down a old bike.About two years ago I had one bike a 70 CB750 and was happy then I saw a picture of a cafe and my wife started riding with me again, so I bought an 81 CB750 to cafe then we decided my 70 CB750 had gotten small for two people so I got a 79 goldwing and we liked that. Now I am finishing a 81 Goldwing Interstate that should even more comfortable for two up riding. And in there somewhere I would up with a 77 Goldwing and a 73 Cb750 which I sold to a member here and after I saw how good of a job he did on it that I regretted selling it so now I am on the lookout for another SOHC CB.

Nope, no chrome fenders - ever. The K1 of 1968 and up had them, but never a K0 Bomber.

This is what it will look like in a few months -

You don't want or need a "what's wrong" post yet do you? Do you know how far you want to go?

You are miles ahead of me when I started. Your big ticket items are going to be mufflers and seat. The handlebars you should be able to find.

Can you say parts bike?

Yep, gotta say that when Gordon finds a bike he wants to bring back to prime condition, it does not matter what it looks like when he finds it and WE know what it's gonna look like when he finishes it cause he pulls out ALL the stops! 8) ;) Good luck with your's.
