anyone have a good burn remedy?
« on: August 12, 2008, 02:31:14 PM »
I'll start this post by saying this, i KNOW i should go to the ER to get it looked at, but the waits at the local emergency rooms are from between 12-24 hours, all thta would accomplish is pissing me off. i welded up a broken patio chair for our pastor this afternoon, pulled off my gloves and promptly grabbed the still smoking metal. needless to say it hurt like a bastid. i have cleaned the burn with plenty of clean water and anti-bacterial soap, but i've never burned myself this badly before. i dont give a hairy rats ass about scarring so thats not a worry. whould i use anti-biotic ointement? cover it? leave it open and dry?like i said it hurts and is starting to turn brown/red.

DO NOT USE ICE OR ICEWATER!  It can do serious damage to the tissue.  You also shouldn't use any ointments because they can trap the heat in.  You are probably going to get blisters (if you haven't already) and it will be in your best interest to keep these from popping.  The wound can get infected and the blister is there to protect the injured area.  Cover it with gauze but don't tape it to the burn.  Also keep it elevated to reduce swelling.  Oh, and if you haven't removed any jewelry yet (rings, watches) do that asap because it will be tough to get them off when your hand swells up.  I don't know if there is anything that makes the pain go away though.  May just have to grit yer teeth and bare it. :-\

ok cool, other than the warm water i used to wash it i've kept it dry. it's already started blistering too. i'll wrap some gause around the wounded area and keep my hand above the level of my heart. i'm taking pain killers for my neck/back but those arent doing anything to alleviate the pain, or it is and if i didnt take the pain meds it would hurt worse lol. like i always say......."stupid should hurt"

Yep, I learned that from experience.  I was cleaning the kitchen and felt some heat by the stove (gas burners) and realized that the burner under the empty teapot was on (for who knows how long) and without thinking I picked the teapot up and touched the bottom of it.  What a dumb ass.  I heard the sizzle before I felt the burn.  Got some nice big blisters on the entire length of 3 fingers.  I don't have any scars though, so you'll just have to take my word for it. ;)

Have an aloe plant handy?

Cut off one of the leaves, peel the skin off, cut into strips big enough to cover your burns, and wrap gauze lightly around them so they wont move.
Change them every few hours. Should help quite a bit.
No.

Send medic09 a message also. Sounds like good answers so far though.

I best burn cure is to not touch hot #$%*  ;D

But when I do, standing cool water for a few min. Let it blister. Keep it clean. No different than any other cut or scrape. Don't waste your money at the ER unless it gets infected. All they will do is give you some useless but expensive ointment and some gause...

i've touched and bumped into welds a few time. it's usually when the part stopped glowing and i have a brain lapse and forget or just brush it by accident. i don't know burns by degrees but i've had a few good ones. also ones on my leg when i'm wearing shorts and touch the exhaust on my bike.

i'll usually run cool water on it and once the skin heals i'll wash it with soap water. just depends on the seriousness.

i use to have an aloe plant and that's probably the best thing you can do for a first degree. feels good too.

HONEY!!!!!!! the bee kind  ;)

Natural honey works wonders on burns. My grandfather swore by it and used it to treat one of his employees when I was a kid. In fact, I think the guy did the same thing  ;D

Anyway, I'm no doctor, and have no scientific facts to back it up, but if I burn myself it's what I use.

Just make sure it's all natural honey, not the half synthetic crap the big stores push.

Found an article on the net that says:

"Honey is also an excellent treatment for burns, and studies done confirm this. In fact studies have shown that the treatment with honey shows better results than treatment with sulfadiazine and less development of infection.

That’s because honey has strong antibacterial qualities which reduce the risk of infection. It also provides a viscous barrier that stops bacteria from entering the burn and fluids from weeping out reducing the odor from the burn."

I wonder if medic09 knows anything about its use?

 Matt.

+1 to that.

I use Aloe all the time after burns.

Take care.

I'm a retired medic/dentist..also a beekeeper!  So I can vouch for some of the stuff that's been mentioned here.  However..if you feel the burn is serious..you should have a regular M.D. look @ it.

I'm wondering what your hesitation is there Fuzzy..is it finances or that you just don't like docs?

I'm guessing you know the difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns?  Sounds like you've got @ least a 2nd degree burn. Anything more that a 3rd degree burn should be looked @ by a doc I feel.

The other things to consider are: even if you're not concerned about the looks of scarring..if it's extensive enough it can mess up your ability to use your hand (you did say it was your hand..right?).
The other aspect about infection..which the comments here seem to have focused on most..is something you shouldn't take lightly..if I may suggest.  You could try the alternative remedies suggested here..but again..I'd let a doc look @ it..just to make sure that it doesn't get worse.

Natural honey..as Matt was suggesting..will work..if the tissue damage isn't too extensive or deep.  There's a product called "Really Raw Honey" that many Health Food stores sell that hasn't been processed.  What you want to get..is honey that hasn't been heated or filtered (strained is okay).  Getting honey from a local beekeeper would probably work also (have to ask around..find the nearest beekeeping club to your area..they can probably direct you).

Natural, unheated honey has several enzymes in it..that are lost with heating above 105 degrees F. The main one that fights infection is called glucose oxidase (common name:Inhibine)..which basically kills bacteria. [The honey bees probably evolved to include it in honey..to keep it from spoilage/attack by bacteria].  Again..as Matt mentioned..some studies have shown natural honey to be AS effective as other antibiotics [it's probably no more effective than prescription antibiotics..but the reason it's getting more attention nowadays is because it eliminates the concern over developing antibiotic resistance as with prescription drugs].

If you are still hesitant about seeing a doc (you don't need to go to an emergency clinic especially..unless your really broke financially)..why don't you post a few pics here of the affected area. But I'm guessing that the "diagnosis" would be the same..i.e. go see a doctor.

If the doc thinks that the honey thing is bunk..just try to find a more sympathetic doc..or ask if it would be okay to use natural honey with their supervision.  My main concern Fuzzy..would be to keep the scarring, potential complications to healing to an absolute minimum.   Feel free to PM me also..If you'd like..and I'll see what I can find for you in terms of referrals (both for docs..as well as sources for natural honey).

Hope this helps,

Ichi

Many moons ago,I managed to dump burning bacon fat on my hand.In an instant ,I had a blister an inch high running from the tip of my thumb all the way around to the tip of the ajacent finger. The pharmacist sold me a tube of vitamin E ointment and told me to keep the burned area moist with the ointment.Did I mention the pain was heavy duty?Anyway, upon applying the ointment, the pain immediately subsided, and only came back as the wound dried.A fresh application of the ointment brought instant relief. In less than 2 weeks, the wound healed and there was no scar.Since then ,the E ointment is always in my medicine cabinet.

I will also jump on the aloe bandwagon.....cuts or burns. Never tried the natural honey but will also keep that in mind.

Been a long time since I burned myself so I havent tried this on burns like that but on sunburns, vinegar sprayed or wiped on works very well. I may work for this type of burn too.

Not sure if this is applicable for this bad of a burn, but when i was younger and worked as a cook I learned that pickles make burns feel much better :)  Sounds crazy, but the first time I tried it I was amazed at how much the putting a pickle on the burn helped with the pain, granted this was usually just me burning a finger slightly on the grill but it worked.

It is probably the vinegar in them.
