K0 chain guard dimensions
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:54:04 PM »
My new K0 parts bike came with a plastic chain guard that wasn't attached, I'm wondering if this is original or is a newer version, does anyone know the dimensions of the originals or of another way to tell the earlier versions from the latter?

Plastic chainguards came only up to K1. By now you should know that there were two types: the earlier one, shorter, and the latter one, longer.

If you can post a picture I can tell you which one is it, but if you google you will probably find some pictures and do the comparison. If you have the earlier type you can get good money for it.

That's definitely not the short chainguard for the early models

Yours look like the K1 type, but there shouldn't be that cut where the rear shock goes.

Does anyone know when the switch from short to long took place? My bike is a 6/70 build, I want it to be authentic, but no need to spend money for expensive parts it never had.

Well, my 1/70 build has the short one.  I see you can buy the short one from Yamiya for like $160 + shipping.  Honda switched to the longer one in hopes it would help keep the chain oil from getting all over the place.  Sorry, I can not tell you exactly when the switch was made.  If you want to be safe stay with the short one.  That is the one I usually see on the 69's and 70's.  But heck, if your bike came with the longer one maybe that is about when they switched or made it available to owners as an optional replacement.
