Oil Pressure Light
« on: August 13, 2008, 11:19:23 AM »
This is a little weird question, but I thought I should ask.
When you turn on the ignition switch (before engine is started), is oil pressure indicator light supposed to be on all the time?  Mine is off, but when I'm starting the engine or when I turn off the engine, the light comes on momentarily.  It seems that the oil pressure switch is connecting at a certain low pressure.  After the engine starts, the light remains off. In most other bikes, the oil pressure switch is connected when the pressure is below certain pressure, but it disconnect at higher pressure. Mine isn't behaving in this way.
I'm guessing that the switch is disfunctioning. Can the oil pressure switch disassembled and cleaned, or do I need to get a new one?  It's a 1974 CB550K0.  Thanks.

Probably need a new one.

Inside is a diaphragm that moves against a spring with oil pressure. The moving diaphragm activates a switch contact.

Two faults are common.
The tiny hole that passes the oil pressure can become clogged and interfere with true pressure transfer.  Sometimes they can be cleaned.  But, there is a risk of piercing the diaphragm, which is the second common problem. As a punctured diaphragm allows oil to contaminate the switch contacts, if not leak out the electrical connection post.

The pressure sending unit is under the left sprocket cover, mounted on the oil pump.
