Topic: Sightseeing in New York New York?

I plan on heading up there tomorrow and I am wondering what should I make a point to see. I neglected to actually plan any of this out so what are some good food joints/sights and interests that are a must?

Take the GrayLine bus tour for $?? - takes you around Manhattan to all the major sites in short space of time (you can get on/get off all day doing this) - alternative to subway and it has an open top bus. I dont norm do bus tours and I enjoyed it.

for a good grub, fresh pints and bike friendly atmosphere check out EAR inn on Canal St just east of West St. I recomend the pot pies w/ a little HP sauce

Battery Park is always nice. 

There's a nice deli across from the church by the world trade center area... good food.  sit upstairs and get a good view.

Take the Bus tour since it gives you a good sense of the City itself. Then get off down around Chinatown where you can eat well and fairly inexpensively. You can wander down toward the South Street Seaport area. Greenwich Village is interesting and they have some nice pubs. Times Square is a sight to behold at night. It has been completely cleaned up and the streets are full of people. New Yorkers are not unfriendly at all, however people walk faster and talk faster. You will enjoy yourself.

It's probably too late to help, but one of my favorite things to do when I have free time is to take the Staten Island ferry from Battery Park. It crosses the harbor to S.I., passes right by the statue of liberty and is free!

I've always wanted to visit NY infact I've always wanted to visit the US. Reading the descriptions you guys give of what to do and where to go makes me want to visit more.

I just got back and all I can say is it was awesome! I think one of my favorite parts was skimming along with all the taxi cabs on the roads that run the length of the island, so much fun! It was certainly an almost surreal change of background and oh what nice scenery was walking around . I definitely feel like its impossible to see/experience even a quarter of the stuff there in a day but that leaves me with an excuse to go back. However after it got dark it became a real life "escape from new york" since I had to rush to get back to Syracuse. With no idea of direction on the some of the sketchiest roads which were bottoming out my tire on my fender, while my luggage was falling off and trying not to get run over, while going entirely too fast, as my bike started making a strange noise, No idea how much gas I had left, or getting caught on any toll roads since I ran out of cash, needless to say it got pretty fun.

I am truly glad you had a good time. I live 45 mins North of NYC and worked there for four years. I still have not seen it all.
Those of you who are afraid of "The City" can see you have nothing to be afraid of. Actually the Island is quite small, about 22 square miles. In the wee hours of the morning you get get from one side to the other is under 15 mins. End to end maybe 20 mins and those time would be faster with no traffic lights.

For anybody on the fence about taking a visit, Do it! Just make sure you have a couple days.

I spent a few hours in Manhatan last year, took train into Penn Station surfacing into Madison Square for my first view of the big city, I wasn't disappointed. We called into a bar for a meal then onto the Empire State Building for a birds eye view. After that a walk past the Library to Times Square down to the subway for my journey to the Staten Island ferry terminal free ride over and return to see the Statue of Liberty. Return on the subway to Penn Station. A great day out courtesy of my son-in-law. Can't wait for my next visit hopefully longer next time.

Incidentally does anyone know what the old building is near to the ferry terminal, looks like it may have something to do with a church, it is surrounded by skyscrapers!

The building across from the ferry is indeed a church, the oldest in NY, a protected landmark, and the one time home of Elizabeth Anne Seton, Americas first saint. I walked passed that twice a day for many years.
