motorcycle powered wheelchair.
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:23:57 PM »
someone gave me a couple of old wheelchairs today and after looking at them a bit i've decided to have a little bizarre fun. i have a cb500t motor that is in neeed of a total rebuild so i was thinking i'd rebuilt that 500t motor and wedge it into the modified wheelchair. my wife, of course, thinks i'm totally stupid but after i finish the 750k (by the end of the weekend i hope) i wont have a project so i thought something totally dangerous, frivolous and dumb was  in order. first question is, will internals from a 450 fit the 500 cases? this motor was left outside for like 10 years so it's all rusted to hell inside.

don't quote me but didn't the 500 derive from the 450 but have a longer cam chain, which would suggest a longer stroke.
that ends my little bit. helpful, not sure but I do like frivolous projects.

So you'll just have lower compression...  What's the big deal?  ;D

Make it good and strong. With a 450 motor you will soon need it for its original purpose :-\ :'( ;D

I'm thinking a barstool would be easier to build, just from a steering stand point.

Not to make light of it, but this guy has the answer - he goes highway speeds, and uses no fuel whatsoever.
Talk about cheap thrills - not too far from here..........

To be honest, it sounds like a bad idea.

the drawings are turning into basically a go-kart with a wheelchair-chair sitting on top of it all. i will be using spoked motorcycle wheels, i got 2 rear wheels with rotors from a bmw r1200 gs, they have 5 lug bolt pattern on them to bolt onto their single sided swingarm. i'm going to get 2 hubs machined to fit the wheels to an axle.

In addition to the wheelie bars, I would also put wings on either side at 15 or 20 degree angles that have a wheel on the end of them so that when you go around a corner in a wheel chair at 40 mph, you won't flip over. ;)  Put it up on two wheels until that wing touches down, but you won't flip over.  You would also look like some f-ed up x-wing or something.

i have given up on the project, basically building it so i could ride farther than 7 feet without dying meant just building a go-kart. so i've decided to look into building a racing lawnmower.

Shame about the "Wheelchair Project", fuzzy. :(  But, if you ever do decide to build a 500T engine, you need to know that the 450 crank is not a "drop-in". The crank bearing are larger and I think the are ball bearings at that. There are a number of parts that will swap out from the 450 to the 500T and back though. The trans will swap out, but the ratios are different (some actually desire the 500T trans). the oil pump is different, but I think it will work as well. The 500T is a "Stroked 450", so you could bore a 500T out and increase the displacement some (not exactly sure how much). You see, at one time, I was thinking about building an engine with the guts of the 500T (punched out as much as possible) and putting the 500T guts into a set of 450 cases to make it a "sleeper" and I found out about the crank difference.
