Fork Sticking
« on: August 14, 2008, 03:14:47 PM »
I have recently noticed that the forks on my 78 f3 don't seem to return as they should. If I stop at a light for example the front end will dip and not return unless I lean back or pull up slightly on the front end this does not happen all the time but I never noticed it before. I replace the seals about 2000 miles ago cleaned the forks and used ATF. I have Progressive springs with spacers that I installed last year and have had no problems until just recently. I checked the FAQs and did a search did not find an answer. Any info would sure help.

Thanks in advance

You seem to be describing "sticktion".  Some possibilities:

Fork tubes are not parallel in the trees or are bent.

The fork lowers are getting side loads (spreading/narrowing) when the front axle is clamped to the lowers. (Could also be an issue of the front axle not assembled properly/ tightly.)

The fork lowers have galled/worn bearing surfaces where they slide on the fork tubes.

That's all I can think of off hand...

One other thing I have noticed lately a slight pulsing when I apply the front brake I don't know if this is related to my Stuction problems.
